Hambantota

Far to the south of Sri Lanka is the city of Hambantota with a colorful and storied traditional Ruhuna past and great promise for the future. This gateway to Sri Lanka is rich in resources and since being upset by the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, has put great emphasis on rebuilding and moving progressively into a central role in the development of the southern region of Sri Lanka. Exkursionen in Hambantota

Indulge your senses with the culture, religion and wildlife of Sri Lanka during this full-day temple and safari excursion.

Kataragama Village

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 1.5-hour drive to Kataragama. Formerly a small village in medieval times, Kataragama is now a fast-developing township in the deep south of Sri Lanka. In a country of many different religious beliefs, what makes Kataragama unique is that it is a site of religious importance for Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims alike.

Kataragama Buddhist Stupa and Hindu Temple

Upon arrival, visit the Kataragama Buddhist Stupa and Hindu Temple. The temple praises Skanda, also known as Kataragama, the Hindu god of war. With six faces and 12 arms, Skanda is believed to be a most benevolent god and worshipped at the beginning of a new venture. During your visit, learn about the history of Kataragama and the site, which has been further hallowed and sanctified by a visit from Lord Buddha during his lifetime. It is believed to be the place where he planted one of the saplings of the Bodhi tree, under which he gained enlightenment.

Lunch and Yala National Park

Next, re-board your coach and proceed for lunch at the Cinnamon Wild Hotel. After lunch, head to Yala National Park, the second-largest national park in Sri Lanka. Upon arrival, begin your afternoon game drive. The park's diverse habitats, including forests, swamps, grasslands and brackish lagoons, offer a unique experience for visitors and support an abundance of animals. The often low-density vegetation provides ideal conditions for safaris, as it allows clear and unobstructed views of the wildlife.

Game Drive and Afternoon Tea

As you traverse the splendid natural landscape of Yala National Park, search for diverse and abundant park inhabitants such as the elephant, spotted deer, sambur, wild buffalo, sloth bear, mongoose, crocodile, and leopard, a favourite amongst park visitors. Yala's bird-life includes over 130 different species, with six species endemic to Sri Lanka. At the conclusion of your game drive, re-board your coach and return for afternoon tea at the Cinnamon Wild Hotel, then commence the approximately 1.5-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of driving, at times on dusty, gravel roads, and a moderate amount of walking for approximately 435 yards (398 metres), with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and safari vehicle, and 20 steps at the temple. The distance between the pier and sites visited is approximately 1.5 hours in each direction. Safari vehicles used are the best available in the city, they will not be of the same standard as vehicles found in the Western countries. Safari vehicles are non-air-conditioned with open sides. Guests must be at least eight years old to participate on this tour. Expect crowds and traffic at the sites visited.
