Exkursionen in COLOMBO

Experience the history of tea and its unique journey from the tree to your cup during this half-day excursion to Ingiriya, located in Western Sri Lanka.

Ingiriya Tea Plantation

Depart the pier for the approximate 2-hour drive to the Ingiriya Tea Plantation .Formerly a British colony known as Ceylon, this small Indian Ocean island is famed for producing some of the finest teas in the world. Since the 1880s, Ceylon tea, the name by which it is still popularly known, has been the country's principal and most famous export; for generations, it has formed the backbone of the Sri Lankan economy, and plays a major part today in the country's fortunes. Arrive at the plantation to a special welcome with garlands made from tea leaves.

Gain firsthand knowledge on how tea is processed - beginning with the plucking from the tea bushes, to the grading of the finished product - as you tour a tea plantation and factory. For guests who would like to purchase some tea, a sales point is available within the complex.

Then, with rubber growing in the same region, you also witness a demonstration of the rubber tapping process by which the latex is extracted from the rubber tree. The rubber industry too occupies an important place in the economy of Sri Lanka and is the second most important plantation crop, as also a major foreign exchange earner.

Guided Tour & Tasting

Upon arrival, take a guided walking tour of the facility and learn about tea-grading, packaging, bagging and more. Next, witness a tea-tasting session, and see how the expert tasters and packers offer tea aficionados a truly unique tea experience. A sales outlet is available in the lobby to purchase some tea before leaving.

Experience the added privilege of enjoying a cup of pure Ceylon tea before boarding your coach for the approximately 2-hour drive back to the pier.

Please Note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking for approximately 150 yards (137 metres) over paved, unpaved and some cobblestone surfaces, with 30 steps to negotiate at the plantation and sales outlet. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility however must be able to get on/off the coach with minimal assistance. It is not suitable for those who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing and sun protection are recommended. Vehicles used are the best available in the city; they are not of the same standards as vehicles found in Western countries. Expect crowds at the sites visited. Leave jewellery and all valuables on-board. Bring local currency for any purchases. The local outlet accepts cash in US Dollars, Euros and local currency. Credit cards are not accepted.

Colombo's Art & Architecture Medley

This half-day excursion shows you the varied hues of the city, taking you slightly off the beaten track.

Depart the pier for Colombo, capital and major port of Sri Lanka and a fascinating city that links the past with the present. Its culture and art are a unique mix of relics of Portuguese, Dutch and English settlements, blended with Indian influences.

Your tour begins at house number 11, on 33rd Lane, residence of renowned architect, the Late Geoffrey Bawa. It is an architectural bricolage housing arts and artefacts from his collection. This interesting composition in a row of four houses slowly acquired over a period of time, started with the construction of a pied-à-terre in 1958. The final result is an introspective labyrinth of rooms and garden courts which together create the illusion of limitless space. While the main house evokes a feeling of a lost world of verandahs and courtyards, the new tower serves as a periscope with views across the treetops towards the sea.

Re-board the vehicle for a panoramic drive past some of the city's highlights.

Lunch today is at Gallery Café - another legacy of Geoffrey Bawa. His former office now houses the café and art gallery run by Shanth Fernando.

Delve deeper into this culture at the elegant, white, colonnaded National Museum, the largest museum in Sri Lanka. View the fascinating and sometimes scary mask collection, which has its share of demons, including Prince Maha Kola, wearing a diadem of interwoven snakes. Another gallery contains a display of outstanding Hindu and Buddhist bronzes. One group of statuettes is connected with the cult of Shiva, and includes a fine sculpture of Shiva as "lord of the dance." Some of the images are mobile - not intended to be worshipped in the most sacred places, but destined for ritual processions around the temple or through the streets of the town. The museum also houses a collection of the regalia of the last King of Kandy.

At the conclusion of the tour, drive past the Colonial heritage of Colombo - the Old Parliament and government buildings; Galle Face Green where Colombo high society once strolled, to see and be seen by those who mattered, against the backdrop of the neo-classical facades of the Colombo Club and the Galle Face Hotel. Today there are joggers who talk politics and business as they run, and there may be kite flyers trying to catch a breeze.

Please note: This excursion requires an extensive amount of walking for approximately 240 yards (219 metres) over unpaved and some cobblestone surfaces with approximately 35 steps at Geoffrey Bawa's residence, and 30 steps at the National Museum. It is not suitable for guests who utilise a wheelchair or those with limited mobility. Comfortable walking shoes and lightweight clothing and sunscreen are recommended. Vehicles used are the best available in the city; they are not of the same standards as vehicles found in Western countries. Leave jewellery and all valuables on-board. Expect crowds at the sites visited. Bring local currency for any purchases. Souvenir shops accept cash in US Dollars, Pounds, Euros and local currency. Credit cards are accepted at some, but not all shops. At some sites, depending on traffic and parking conditions, it may be necessary to cross busy streets. Sites may also be crowded and guests need to exercise caution. Photo and video taking is prohibited in certain areas of Geoffrey Bawa's residence. Shoes must be removed prior to entering Geoffrey Bawa's residence. At the National Museum there is a charge of US 3.00 (at time of printing) for pictures and USD 18.00 (at time of printing) for videos, to be paid directly to the museum. Photos of the government building and old Parliament are prohibited. Order of sites may be reversed.

Elephants of Pinnawela

Learn about and observe the care, feeding and conservation of the elephants of Pinnawela during this memorable full-day tour to the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage.

Depart the pier for a short 15-minute drive to the Colombo Railway Station. On arrival, board the train for the approximate 2-hour ride to Rambukana Railway Station where your coach will be waiting for the short transfer to the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage. Rest assured, the short journey is well worth it! During the ride, take in the scenic beauty of the lush, green Sri Lankan countryside from the grandeur of your air-conditioned train car.

Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage

The Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage was created to care for baby elephants found abandoned or orphaned. Today, approximately 80 animals are cared for, fed, studied and trained by the Sri Lankan Wildlife Authority. Once acclimated to a lifestyle in captivity, the elephants are unable to care for themselves in the wild. As a result, they grow up and reproduce in the protection of the reserve, and very small babies may be spotted amongst the ever-growing family.

Elephant Care, Bathing & Feeding

During your visit, the staff explains and demonstrates the care afforded to these magnificent animals, as well as the on-going battle for the conservation of their native habitats. If your timing is right, you can observe the staff helping the elephants take their daily bath in the nearby river. Your visit includes a relaxing lunch at the Pinnalanda River View restaurant, followed by an opportunity to watch the elephants being fed.

At the conclusion of your visit, board your coach for the approximate 3.5 hour drive back to the pier. A comfort stop will be made en-route.

Please note: This tour requires an extensive amount of walking for approximately 530 yards (484 metres) over uneven surfaces and 40 steps at the Colombo Railway Station, 60 steps at the Rambukkana Railway Station, 8 steps at the Pinnalanda River View Restaurant and 50 steps at the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Vehicles used are the best available in the city; they are not of the same standards as vehicles found in Western countries. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection from the ship. Expect crowds at the sites visited. Guests wishing to use a video camera should carry some local currency for videography fees at the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage. The train is air-conditioned and the Pinnalanda River View restaurant is air-cooled. Elephants at Pinnawela are not fully-tamed; guests should avoid proximity with the animals. Total time spent at the orphanage is approximately 1.25 hours, and 1-hour for lunch.

Life & Lore in Colombo

Explore the religious and cultural history of Colombo during a half-day sightseeing excursion through this historic capital and major port city.

Scenic Colombo City

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 75-minute drive through the city's commercial district and Pettah Bazaar area. Along the way, pass by the Pettah Fort, old government buildings and Victoria Park, or 'Vihara Mahadevi Park', a botanical garden for tropical species. Across the street is the imposing, Neo-classical Town Hall. A visit is made to Cinnamon Gardens, a former cinnamon plantation turned upscale residential district. Here, see the University and most of the embassies in Colonial mansions lining the lovely, shaded avenues.

National Museum

Next, a visit is made to National Museum. Upon arrival at this elegant, white, colonnaded building, view a scary and fascinating mask collection, a gallery filled with outstanding Hindu and Buddhist bronzes, a collection of the regalia of the King of Kandy and more. Some of the images are mobile to enable ritual processions around the temple or through the streets of the town. (A video camera fee of USD $18.00, at time of printing, is required to be paid directly to the Museum.)

Galle Face Green & Gangarama Temple

Leaving the museum, re-board your coach and drive to Galle Face Green. A former haunt of Colombo high society, Galle Face Green is situated in the foreground of the Neo-classical facades of the Colombo Club and the Galle Face Hotel. After a refreshment stop at a local hotel, proceed for a visit to the Gangarama Temple, the nicest and most intimate of Colombo's Buddhist temples.

Afterwards, commence the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking for approximately 200 yards (about 183 metres), with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, 30 steps at the National Museum, 10 steps at Galle Face Hotel and 10 steps at the Gangarama Temple. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Vehicles used are the best available in the city; they are not of the same standards as vehicles found in Western countries. Sun protection is recommended. Proper attire is required to visit the sacred sites; shorts and short skirts are not permitted, and women must have their shoulders covered. Shoes must be removed prior to entering the temples. The local Silversea representative meets you at the pier following disembarkation. You are directed to your vehicle for the 3 ½ hour journey to Thirappane and Wilpattu National Park. A restroom stop will be made en-route.

On arrival, check in at Ullagalla Resort in time for lunch. Once the ancestral estate of local Anuradhapura nobility, this property features a 150-year-old mansion at its center, with 20 private, ecologically-built villas spread across 58 acres of lush greenery.

After spending the afternoon at leisure this is your opportunity to discover Wilpattu National Park located in the Northwestern lowland dry zone of Sri Lanka. This spectacular park is 131,693 hectares (over 325,000 acres) & features nearly sixty lakes spread throughout. Take your first trip into the wild on a game drive accompanied by a local naturalist.

Return to the Ullagalla Resort and enjoy a BBQ dinner.

DAY 2 - THIRAPPANE

After Breakfast, today is dedicated in exploring the Wilpattu National Pak and an early start is the best way to spot the varied wildlife. Accompanied by a local naturalist, enjoy a jeep drive through the bush before returning to the resort for breakfast.

Relax the rest of the morning indulging in the facilities of this luxury boutique property followed by lunch. This evening is your second opportunity of the day to try and spot that elusive leopard.

Return to the Ulagalla Resort for an exclusive dinner with an evening lecture by a local naturalist.

DAY 3 - THIRAPPANE

After breakfast drive to Anuradhapura Air Base for your helicopter flight to Sigiriya and its colossal Rock Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982. A MI-17 helicopter, with a maximum capacity of 26, will be used.

Standing 200 meters high, the rock fortress was built by King Kassyapa I in the 5th Century AD and was a royal citadel for more than 18 years. It is a complex of buildings, part royal palace and part self-contained town with the famous Lion Gate, water gardens, boulder gardens, walls and moats on par with the best in the ancient world. In a sheltered pocket approached by a spiral stairway are the famous Sigiriya frescoes, 21 figures of females depicted as rising from the clouds, some of the earliest surviving pictorial art in Sri Lanka. The poems inscribed on the rock by admirers of the frescoes, and known as the 'Sigiri graffiti,' are among the most ancient texts in the Sinhalese language.

With your guide, a qualified archaeologist, you can walk up the 1200 steps at your own pace. Once at the top your guide will relate stories of the fortress' heyday.

Enjoy a well-deserved lunch at the Elephant Corridor Hotel in Sigiriya. After lunch, return to Sigiriya Air Base where you re-board your helicopter for your second UNESCO World Heritage Site of the day - Anuradhapura.

Anuradhapura is Sri Lanka's first capital kingdom and was founded in the 5th Century BC according to the ancient Sinhalese Chronicle 'Mahavansa'. The construction of reservoirs, canals and irrigation channels during this period exhibited an amazing engineering knowledge. The unique feature of Buddhism in Sri Lanka is the Stupa (Dagoba), usually a curved dome which enshrines relics of Lord Buddha and objects of veneration. At Anuradhpaura there are three magnificent stupas to be found dating back to 3rd - 4th century AD. One is even said to have been taller than pyramid of Giza.

Return to your hotel for an exclusive dinner.

Overnight at the Ullagalla Resort

DAY 4 - THIRAPPANE / NEGOMBO

After breakfast, check-out of the hotel and transfer to the old traditional fishing town of Negombo. With its white sandy beaches and 100 km canal running through it, this is certainly another side to Sri Lanka. You can still feel the Dutch and Portuguese presence here with several old colonial buildings dating back to that era, especially the old Dutch fort which is now part of the prison. The Dutch influence really comes to light when you see the canal network that is still in use today.

On arrival in Negombo check-in to Jetwing Beach Hotel in time for lunch and spend the remainder of the afternoon at leisure.

This afternoon, meet Mark Forbes who will accompany you on guided sightseeing walk around town making various stops to take photographs. Mark, an intrepid city explorer will unlock the backstreets and colorful alley ways to showcase a vibrant and historical city on foot. There is a very big Catholic influence in this area with the Katuwapitiya Church and the Grand Street Church being the biggest two parishes in Negombo. You can also see how the religions live side by side by visiting the impressive Agurukaramulla Temple, which brings Buddhists from all over Sri Lanka to Negombo every year.
