LIMA (Callao)

When people discuss great South American cities, Lima is often overlooked. But Peru's capital can hold its own against its neighbors. It has an oceanfront setting, colonial-era splendor, sophisticated dining, and nonstop nightlife. It's true that the city—clogged with traffic and choked with fumes—doesn't make a good first impression, especially since the airport is in an industrial neighborhood. But wander around the regal edifices surrounding the Plaza de Armas, among the gnarled olive trees of San Isidro's Parque El Olivar, or along the winding lanes in the coastal community of Barranco, and you'll find yourself charmed. In 1535 Francisco Pizarro found the perfect place for the capital of Spain's colonial empire. On a natural port, the so-called Ciudad de los Reyes (City of Kings) allowed Spain to ship home all the gold the conquistador plundered from the Inca. Lima served as the capital of Spain's South American empire for 300 years, and it's safe to say that no other colonial city enjoyed such power and prestige during this period. When Peru declared its independence from Spain in 1821, the declaration was read in the square that Pizarro had so carefully designed. Many of the colonial-era buildings around the Plaza de Armas are standing today. Walk a few blocks in any direction for churches and elegant houses that reveal just how wealthy this city once was. But the poor state of most buildings attests to the fact that the country's wealthy families have moved to neighborhoods to the south over the past century. The walls that surrounded the city were demolished in 1870, making way for unprecedented growth. A former hacienda became the graceful residential neighborhood of San Isidro. In the early 1920s the construction of tree-lined Avenida Arequipa heralded the development of neighborhoods such as bustling Miraflores and bohemian Barranco.Almost a third of the country's population of 29 million lives in the metropolitan area, many of them in relatively poor conos: newer neighborhoods on the outskirts of the city. Most residents of those neighborhoods moved there from mountain villages during the political violence and poverty that marked the 1980s and ’90s, when crime increased dramatically. During the past decade the country has enjoyed peace and steady economic growth, which have been accompanied by many improvements and refurbishment in the city. Residents who used to steer clear of the historic center now stroll along its streets. And many travelers who once would have avoided the city altogether now plan to spend a day here and end up staying two or three.

Pedro de Osma Museum

Depart the pier in direction of Pedro de Osma Art Museum. The imposing former residence of Pedro de Osma, dating from the beginning of this century, is now a private museum, housing a collection of colonial art of Cusco and Ayacucho Schools.

The artistic finds come from the personal collection formed by Don Pedro de Osma Gildemeister between years 1936 - 1967. He was a connoisseur of the Peruvian virreinal art, who reunited gradually around familiar patrimony remarkable objects of the more varied sorts and techniques that are a good reflect of the Peruvian art of centuries XVI, XVII, XVIII and XIX. All the pieces were lodged in his large house of Barranco, arranged originally in tight exhibition, in the style of the European palace-museums of century XIX.

Victor Delfin Art Gallery

He is one of the leading sculptors and painters in Peru and is best known for his monumental "El Beso" sculpture unveiled in 1993 in the Love Park by the Pacific Ocean in the Miraflores District of Lima.

Delfín has a worldwide reputation; his art has been exhibited across South and North America and is housed in major museums and private collections. Delfín is highly regarded for his massive metalwork sculptures of birds, horses and other animals, as well as sensual, often sexually charged paintings. His art can also have a strong political theme, such as 1996 chronicle that denounced, with great irony, the corruption and authoritarianism during the regime of Alberto Fujimori.

Delfín's studio, in the artistic Barranco District of Lima, overlooks the ocean. His house, filled with his paintings and sculptures, is now a bed-and-breakfast run by his daughter.

Barranco District

Upon arrival, explore the 'Lost City of the Incas'. Your overnight stay at the famed Sanctuary Lodge allows you to spend additional time at the historic site with fewer tourists. For a different experience, return to Cuzco aboard the Vistadome train.

Please note: Participants in this program should schedule their arrival flight into Lima, Peru.

Please check with your travel professional for details regarding Peruvian visa requirements. It is the responsibility of each guest to obtain appropriate visa documents prior to cruising.

DAY 1 - LIMA/ CUSCO

Upon arrival in Callao, you are met and transferred from the pier directly to the airport in Lima for a 90-minute flight to Cusco. If the sky is clear, enjoy the impressive views of the Andes. Upon arrival in Cusco, claim your baggage and then board the coach. Enroute to the hotel, stop for a light lunch at a local restaurant.

To help you acclimate and adjust to the change in altitude, we suggest to take things easy, do not overly exert yourself, and avoid alcohol. The local remedy is to drink coca tea.

Overnight at the Belmond Monasterio Hotel -Cusco

DAY 2 - CUSCO/ MACHU PICCHU

An early departure from the hotel takes you to the Poroy train station. Here you board the Belmond Hiram Bingham luxury train for Machu Picchu. The trip will take approximately three hours during which brunch is served. Watch as the train passes through the spectacular scenery of the Urubamba Valley. The trip ends at the Aguas Calientes station at the foot of Machu Picchu. From here, a 25-minute bus ride will take you up a winding road to 'the Lost City of the Incas', arriving around 1:00 p.m. - at an hour when many tourists are on their way back to the train station. The setting of the ruins amongst green-clad mountain peaks is a spectacular and unforgettable sight.

Upon arrival at the site, commence a guided tour of the marvelous Citadel, then take a stroll through this impressive archaeological site on your own. Explore the famous "Lost City of the Incas" and feel its pulse while visualizing the lives of the priests, craftsmen, and servants who lived in this seemingly incredible site. Excavations have only added to the mystery, revealing the skeletons of 173 people along with artifacts and woolen clothing, though no gold.

Afterward, relax with afternoon tea at the Belmond Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge, the only hotel located within the very grounds of the Machu Picchu Sanctuary citadel. Dinner is served at the Lodge.

Overnight at the Belmond Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge

DAY 3 - MACHU PICCHU/ CUSCO

After an early-morning breakfast at the lodge, depart for an opportunity to witness an incomparable sight (weather permitting); the sun rising over Machu Picchu. Due to the proximity of the hotel to the site, overnight guests have time in the morning to enjoy the citadel with very few other visitors around.

Spend ample time at the ruins today exploring on your own. An early lunch is served at the lodge before you depart for the train station and board the Vistadome train. Sit back and relax for the next 1.5 hours as the train makes its way back to Ollantaytambo train station. Leave the train and transfer back to the historic Belmond Monasterio Hotel. Dinner this evening is on your own account.

Overnight at the Belmond Monasterio Hotel - Cusco

DAY 4 - CUSCO/ LIMA

Begin your day with breakfast in the hotel restaurant and then board the coach for your city tour. A simple city tour includes a visit to the Koricancha, also known as "The Temple of the Sun". According to the chronicles, the temple was covered in gold leaf and filled with golden images. The city's showpiece is the main square, the Plaza de Armas, where the magnificent, 16th-century cathedral is located. When inside, pay particular attention to the unique rendition of The Last Supper painting At first glance the biblical scene may appear standard, but upon closer observation, the roasted animal on the dish placed in the center of the table looks a bit peculiar. Many believe it's a popular local meat called 'cuy'.

Stop for lunch at a local restaurant. Transfer to the Cusco airport where you will embark on your flight from Cusco to Lima. Upon arrival in Lima, claim your baggage and board the coach for your transfer to the Belmond Miraflores Park Hotel.

Itinerary:

Day 1 -Disembark the Silver Cloud this morning and transfer to the airport for your charter flight to La Paz, Bolivia. After getting acclimatized and time permitting, visit the Cholet Mansion district in El Alto, guided by Freddy Mamani, the charismatic architect who started the "New Andean Architecture". This will give you an idea how nature and culture are interwoven in Bolivia and will prepare you for Bolivia's otherworldliness. In the evening attend a private welcome dinner. Overnight at the Casa Grande Hotel.

Day 2 -After breakfast, a 5-hour drive to Sajama National Park will take you to the bottom of ice-capped Sajama, Bolivia's highest peak. Your luxury yurt will be ready to welcome you with drinks and coca tea to help you relax at 4,500 meters altitude. Before dinner an informative presentation will introduce you to the wonders of Sajama National Park.

Day 3 -This will be a day of exploring the Sajama National Park with its volcanoes and hot springs, looking for the evergreen yareta plants that based on their growth rate are estimated to reach an age of up to 3,000 years. We intend to see one of the small Aymara communities that have lived in the rugged region for millennia. These indigenous families work the land as they have always done, raising and herding livestock, using the wool of llamas and alpacas to yarn fabrics and weave beautiful textiles. Local herders will talk to us about breeding and sheering alpacas.

Day 4 -Today we will travel overland across never ending plains. Heading south we will have the Occidental Andes and the border with Chile on our right while the volcanos to our left are part of the Oriental Andes. Getting closer to the Uyuni salt flats, lagunas, cacti and flamingos will become more visible. After eight hours of driving from Sajama, we will have descended some 900 meters and will reach our luxury dome camp on the Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt flat, at the base of Tunupa Volcano.

Day 5 -This morning you visit the small village of Tahua and will hike to the cave of the Coquesa mummies at the foot of Tunupa Volcano. The Salar is the result of transformations of prehistoric lakes and is covered by a few meters of salt crust that is being mined in a few areas. In certain parts of the Salar, small mountains emerge like islands out of the salt. We will spend the rest of the day exploring the Salar and islands, visiting Isla de los Pescadores with its cactus forest and will have an unforgettable view of the immense salt lake and the Andes during a cocktail at sunset. At night, marvel at the clear sky and the amazing view of constellations and stars.

Day 6 - Set out onto the salt flat during the morning, crossing some 70 kilometers towards the southern edge. Once back on terra firma we will head further south to reach what is considered Bolivia's wildest area: Sud Lipez. At the small village of San Juan we will have a look at the tiny archaeological and ethnological museum. We will later have a beautiful view of the volcano Ollagüe and will drive past the four lakes Hedionda, Ramaditas, Canada and Chiarcota. This so-called Lagunas area has hundreds of flamingos and other birds that still thrive in these harsh surroundings. A yurt camp will be waiting for you at the end of the day.

Day 7 -Today you will have ample time to explore the colorful Lagunas, look for bird and wildlife, marvel at the colors of the rock formations and mountains, and take a bath in hot springs. Some of the colors of the land are so strange that one desert further southwest in the Pampa Jara has been named Dalí Desert.

Day 8 -Another long day will take through canyons, over passes reaching 4,800 meters, across stony plateaus and past sand dunes to reach the Eduardo Avaroa Natural Reserve. From our camp in the Siloli Desert we will drive to see intriguing rock formations, including the Stone Tree, to Laguna Colorada with its rare James's Flamingos. From there we will enter the Salar de Chalviri to reach Laguna Verde, located at the base of the famous volcano Licancabur. The unbelievable color of Laguna Verde changes based on the sediments in the lake. After crossing the border, the drive will be going through the Chilean National Reserve Los Flamencos, losing some 2,000 meters in altitude, before reaching San Pedro de Atacama. Overnight at the Alto Atacama Desert Lodge and Spa.

Day 9 - Enjoy a relaxing a day at the Alto Atacama Desert Lodge and Spa. Today your only decision is how much or how little to do!

Day 10 - This morning we will leave San Pedro de Atacama for Calama. On the way to the airport stop at the Pukará de Quitor, a pre-Incan stone fortress looking over the San Pedro River and valley.

Following your arrival in Calama transfer to your international flight back home.
