Silversea Luxury Cruises Nach AKUREYRI

Akureyri, called the Capital of the North is the second largest urban area in Iceland, and a lively one at that. Hemmed by the 60-km (37-mile) long Eyjafjörður, Akureyri is sheltered from the ocean winds and embraced by mountains on three sides. Late 19th-century wooden houses impart a sense of history, and the twin spires of a modern Lutheran church rising on a green hill near the waterfront, provide a focal point. To the south of Akureyri is the pyramid-shape rhyolite mountain Súlur. View more

Beyond it is Kerling, the highest peak in Eyjafjörður District.

Diamond Circle Flight-Seeing Adventure

Explore the most spectacular topography in northern Iceland during this exhilarating flight-seeing excursion to the Diamond Circle.

Akureyri, Diamond Circle, Goðafoss Waterfall, Lake Mývatn, Dettifoss Waterfall

Depart the pier for the short drive to the airport. Upon arrival, receive your safety and flight instructions, then board your awaiting airplane and begin your panoramic, approximately 1.5-hour flight-seeing tour. After take-off, fly over the renowned Diamond Circle. A top attraction and must-see in northern Iceland, the Diamond Circle covers an area rich in volcanic and geothermal features. Along the way, marvel at the magnificent Goðafoss Waterfall and Lake Mývatn, with its numerous attractions and geothermal phenomena, such as Krafla, Námasarð, Hvelfjall and pseudo craters. From here, fly over the Dettifoss Waterfall. Europe's most powerful waterfall, its cascades plunge from a height of 144 feet (44 meters) into a narrow canyon.

Game of Thrones Landscape, Vatnajökull National Park, Troll Peninsula Mountains, Akureyri

Next, fly through the landscape of the epic television series, Game of Thrones, which was filmed in this dramatic landscape, then over Vatnajökull National Park and magnificent canyons before the final leg of your flight back to Akureyri. En route, relax and take in the northeast coastline as the Troll Peninsula Mountain range comes to view in the west. At the conclusion of your flight-seeing tour, return to the airport, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a minimal amount of walking for approximately 109 yards-164 yards (about 100 metres-150 metres), at times over with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and board/de-board the airplane. This tour is not suitable for guests with a fear of heights, guests prone to airsickness, guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear warm, comfortable clothing in layers with sturdy, flat, closed-toe, and non-slip walking shoes, and bring sun protection and a weatherproof jacket from the ship. The flight routes and operation of this tour are subject to weather conditions. The tour sequence may vary. Space on this tour is extremely limited; we suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Experience volcanic energy and natural wonders during this full-day tour such as: Vast lava fields, bubbling hot pools and hissing fumaroles; craters and Luna-landscapes; historical waterfalls and internationally acclaimed bird life; sweeping valleys and green pasture lands.

This tour offers the opportunity to see the major highlights accessible from Akureyri on a one-day trip. Leaving the port, a 45-minute drive takes you to the Godafoss waterfall.

Godafoss Waterfalls

The 'Waterfalls of the Gods' is not only one of Iceland's most beautiful waterfalls, but also a historical site named after the pagan idols, which a chieftain threw into the falls when Iceland adopted Christianity. After a photo stop, proceed to the Lake Myvatn district.

Lake Myvatn

This area is famous for its grandiose scenery and bird life. It is also one of the most volcanically active regions on earth. Nowhere else in Iceland can you see the same combination of craters, fresh lava fields, hot springs, geysers and bubbling mood pools. Take a walk to explore several pseudo craters, before continuing to Dimmuborgir, a moonscape of mesmerizing lava fields.

Dimmuborgir

View this dramatic lava landscape of strange formations, jagged columns and arches before proceeding for lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch, drive to the final destination of the day, Namaskard geothermal fields.

Namaskard

This stunning geothermal fields are located next to the Namafjall Mountain. The area is covered with mud pools, steam vents, sulphur deposits, boiling springs and fumaroles.

Passing through Reykjahlid Village, continue along the shores of Lake Myvatn and then head back to Akureyri and the ship.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking, over marked pathways of mud, gravel and loose stones underfoot at all of the locations visited. The pathways can be "slippery" because of loose gravel and there are some slight inclines to negotiate. We recommend wearing sturdy shoes and dressing in layers. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility and those who utilise a wheelchair as guests may stay on the coach to avoid walking. The order of sights may be reversed.

Leisurely Akureyri & Godafoss

This easy orientation tour departs from Akureyri, the cultural and commercial centre of the north, and travels toward beautiful Godafoss.

Godafoss Waterfalls

Waterfalls of the Gods in English, these impressive falls carry a huge volume of water. Their name marks the historical event that took place at these falls in the year 1,000 when the Chieftain, Thorgeir, made a public declaration in favour of Christianity, by throwing his carvings of the pagan gods into the falls. Thorgeir was also President of the Althing (or Parliament), at that time and it was he who was charged with the difficult task of deciding the nation's fate in regard to its choice of religion. A stop is made at Fossholl, on the eastern bank of the river Skjalfandafljot, a short distance from Godafoss for an approximate 30-minute pause.

From Godafoss return to Akureyri, an extremely friendly town, colourfully framed by the sea and the mountains. Drive through the oldest part of the town and see the Danish influence from the time Iceland was under the Danish Crown and Akureyri was the most Danish of all Danish towns. Become acquainted with the newer parts of Akureyri and stop at the Botanical Gardens. See examples of every species indigenous to Iceland and an extensive collection of high-latitude and high-altitude plants from around the world. Re-board the coach for the return drive to the ship.

Please note: This tour involves easy walking and most of the sights of this tour can be seen from the bus. It is suitable for guests with limited mobility and those who utilise a wheelchair, able to embark/disembark the coach via steps. The tour sequence may vary.

Indulge your senses amidst a few of Iceland's many natural and geothermal wonders during this invigorating, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Godafoss Waterfall

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 45-minute drive across the fjord to the Godafoss Waterfall. The Godafoss (Waterfall of the Gods) is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Iceland. After a brief photo stop here, re-board your coach and head for Myvatn.

Myvatn Nature Baths

The Myvatn Nature Baths overlook Lake Myvatn, and offer guests a unique experience in which they are completely bathed by nature. During your visit, take a relaxing dip amidst clouds of steam and a luxurious swim in a pool of geothermal water drawn from depths of up to 1.55 miles (about 2.5 kilometres). The baths contain a unique blend of minerals, silicates and geothermal microorganisms. The warm, soothing waters of the Myvatn Nature Baths are beneficial to skin and spirit alike, creating a sense of well-being and a lasting memory of your visit.

Facilities

Facilities include a reception area and cafeteria, changing rooms and showers for up to 120 guests, three natural steam baths accommodating up to 50 bathers at a time, and an approximately 53,819 square-foot (about 5,000-square-metre) outdoor geothermal bathing pool maintained at a constant temperature of approximately 100ºF-104ºF (about 38ºC-40ºC). Due to its chemical composition, undesired bacteria and vegetation do not thrive in the lagoon, making chlorine or any other disinfectant redundant. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the picturesque, approximately 75-minute drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of activity and a moderate amount of walking for approximately 328 yards (about 300 metres), at times over uneven, gravel, and muddy surfaces and loose stones, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach. This tour is not suitable for pregnant guests, guests with heart or respiratory problems, guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear warm, comfortable clothing in layers with a weatherproof jacket or coat and flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection, a towel, swimsuit, and sandals or flip-flops from the ship. Local custom and pool regulations mandate that all guests shower and wash thoroughly with soap and water (without swim attire) before entering the baths. Separate shower facilities for men and women are available on site. Swimwear must be worn in the thermal baths. Guests under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Spend a day exploring the spectacular natural beauty and landmarks of Iceland from a unique perspective during this panoramic, off-road sightseeing excursion.

Akureyri, Godafoss Waterfall, Lake Myvatn and Lúdent Crater

Depart the pier aboard a 4x4 Super Jeep for the scenic, approximately 40-minute drive to the Godafoss Waterfall. The Godafoss (Waterfall of the Gods) is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Iceland. After a brief photo stop here, re-board your coach and head to Lake Myvatn.

Lunch, Bárðardalur Valley, Skjálfandafljót River and Vatnajökull Glacier

Next, re-board your jeep and proceed for a two-course lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch, your drive continues through remote heaths and valleys until reaching the Bárðardalur Valley. Here, the Skjálfandafljót River, a white glacial river originating from the Vatnajökull Glacier (the largest ice cap in Iceland) runs down the Bárðardalur Valley and across the highlands, carving out magnificent riverbeds along the way.

Aldeyjarfoss Waterfall and Vaglaskógur Forest

Situated at the edge of the Highlands is the breath-taking Aldeyjarfoss Waterfall, where white water cascades from a high cliff into a ravine lined with black basalt columns. After a photo stop here, re-board your coach and drive down the valley towards Akureyri. En route, drive through the birch and flowery Vaglaskógur Forest. A brief photo stop is made in the forest to marvel at your surrounds, and enjoy the sounds of birds singing and leaves rustling. At the conclusion of your tour, commence the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier along an old, abandoned mountain road that winds its way up-and-over a picturesque, 1,968-foot (about 600-metre) mountain.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of off-road driving over bumpy, uneven terrain and walking for approximately 0.6 miles (about one kilometre), at times over uneven and gravel surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the Jeep. This tour is not suitable for pregnant guests, guests with neck or back problems, guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear warm, comfortable clothing in layers with a weatherproof jacket or coat and flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection from the ship. Guests must be at least 12 years old to participate on this tour; guests under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Views are subject to weather conditions. The tour sequence may vary. Space on this tour is very limited; we suggest you book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Polar Flight to Grimsey Island

Explore the northernmost Icelandic settlement within the Arctic Circle during this memorable, half-day excursion to Grimsey Island via airplane and on-foot.

Scenic Flight to Grimsey Island, Coves, Basalt Columns and Sea Cliffs

Depart the pier for the short drive to the Akureyri Airport. Upon arrival, board your plane for the breath-taking, approximately 40-minute polar flight to Grímsey Island. En route, take in spectacular panoramic vistas of the wild mountains on both sides of the Eyjafjörður Fjord. On the approach to the island, beautiful coves decorated with basalt columns lay before you, as well as approximately 327-foot-high (about 100-metre-high) sea cliffs on the east coast.

Grimsey Island

Located more than 25 miles (about 40 kilometres) north of the mainland and only (about 5.3 square kilometres) in size, the island of Grimsey can best be described as a green oasis in the north Atlantic, where industries such as fishing and farming are the main pillars of the economy. Guests often visit this northernmost Icelandic settlement in order to step inside the Arctic Circle and receive a certificate as proof; part of the reason why you are visiting today.

Guided Walking Tour, Birdwatching and Local Delicacies

Upon arrival, de-board your plane and take a guided walking tour of the island's highlights. Stroll through the island's remote village, which, despite its small population, has its own elementary school, guesthouse and swimming pool. A small souvenir shop offering mementoes of your visit can be found in town. In addition, birdwatching opportunities abound on Grimsey Island. The extensive bird colonies here are said to accommodate at least 60 different species, of which 36 nest on the island (kittiwakes, puffins, fulmars, guillemots, Arctic terns, and more). Following your guided tour, proceed for an exclusive Grímsey cocktail accompanied by local delicacies, then board your plane for the approximately 40-minute flight back to Akureyri. Upon arrival, your tour concludes with a short drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 0.6 miles (about one kilometre), at times over uneven surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and five steps to board/de-board the airplane. This tour is not suitable for guests with a fear of heights, guests prone to motion sickness, guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear warm, comfortable clothing in layers with a weatherproof jacket or coat and flat, sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection from the ship. Guests must be at least 21 years old to be served alcoholic beverages. Space on this tour is extremely limited; we suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment. Operation of this tour is subject to weather conditions.
