Silversea Luxury Cruises To CHERBOURG

CHERBOURG

A true maritime city, Cherbourg has tales to last a lifetime. Whether it was the Titanic sailing into port before departing on its ill-fated Atlantic crossing, the German occupation that took over the city during World War II, or the important role it played as a naval port during the Napoleonic wars, Cherbourg has seen it all. Watching out over the English Channel, the grand, walled harbour now welcomes visitors from across the world to bear witness to its extraordinary tales of seafaring history. View more

Cité de la Mer is a vast celebration of all things maritime, housed right in the city’s storied port. Squeeze yourself through the claustrophobic, metallic interior of a decommissioned nuclear submarine, shuddering as you imagine life in the murky depths of the ocean. The museum offers a full and detailed account of every aspect of the maritime experience – and you can see colourful fish and sharks cruising through the vast aquarium, before learning more about the Titanic’s famous call - all before even stepping foot into the city proper. The tri-colours of the French flag flutter high over the city at Fort du Roule. Climb the short sharp hill to enjoy views back down over the city’s expanse, as it rolls down to the ocean below. Inside, a compact museum tells the tale of life under the Nazi regime and how liberation was achieved - following D-Day’s unparalleled land invasion across the region’s beaches. Of course, you’re also well placed for exploring more of Normandy’s decisive landing spots and battlefields, where you’ll see the windswept, haunting beauty of these coastlines first-hand, where so much was sacrificed by so many.

Excursions in CHERBOURG

Battles of Normandy : Utah & Omaha Landings

Relive one of the most historic events of World War II during this memorable, full-day excursion to Normandy. Early in the morning on June 6, 1944, about 156,000 Allied soldiers stormed a handful of beaches along the coast of Normandy, France. Although choppy seas and heavy German resistance prevented them from fully meeting their objectives that day, they were able to gain a crucial foothold.

American Cemetery

Depart the pier for the approximate 1.5 hour drive to Omaha Beach. The majority of the nearly 10,000 American soldiers killed at Omaha Beach are buried in this 170-acre (69-hectare) cemetery on land given to the United States by France as a token of her gratitude. Here, 9,386 marble crosses and Stars of David are aligned on a plateau above the beach. A memorial contains the Tablets of the Missing, and a map outlines the battle sites of the Normandy beaches.

La Chenevière

Next, proceed for a two-course lunch accompanied by wine at La Chenevière, an 18th-century chateau located near Omaha Beach, approximately 30 minutes away. The dining room, overlooking the park, has certain grandeur on an intimate scale, while classic cuisine allows you to explore all the distinctive flavours of Normandy, a generous and distinguished cuisine based on delicious local produce.

Arromanches Invasion Museum

Proceed next to the small seaside town of Arromanches via the D-Day landing beaches of Sword, Juno and Gold. Upon arrival, visit the Arromanches Invasion Museum. This important museum was dedicated to the largest landing operation in history on June 6, 1944, when the Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy to attack the German lines.

During your visit, see films and models that re-create the entire operation along the D-Day beaches, and illustrate the logistical importance of Port Winston. A short distance offshore, remnants of the artificial port can still be seen.

Following your visit, commence the approximate 1.5 hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking over uneven ground, some cobblestone streets and some steps. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility and those who utilise a wheelchair, as long as guests can transfer from their chair. The tour sequence may vary. Traffic conditions may affect the duration of this tour.We suggest wearing comfortable, flat walking shoes. Timings for this tour can vary depending on allowances given from the cemeteries based on ceremonies.

Bayeux & its Tapestry

Walk in the footsteps of history when you travel to Bayeux, the first town to be liberated by the Allies at the end of World War II. It survived intact and boasts an impressive array of architecture dating from antiquity to the Renaissance to the modern day. See the famous Bayeux Tapestry as well as the Bayeux Cathedral, which dates from 1077 and was built in both Roman and Gothic styles.

Bayeux Tapestry

Depart the pier for the approximately 1.5-hour drive to Bayeux. Upon arrival you will take a guided visit to the William the Conqueror Centre, the former seminary where the Bayeux Tapestry is displayed. The 225-foot (about 69-metre) Bayeux Tapestry is probably the world's most celebrated piece of needlework; it depicts the dramatic story of the Norman conquest of England on 58 panels and tells the story of William the Conqueror, from the build-up to the invasion of England to the Battle of Hastings in 1066, when William defeated King Harold to become King of England.

After a 20-minute audio-visual film, your visit takes you through different sections of this wonderful Medieval tapestry. The cloth is remarkably well-preserved, and features scenes that depict 11th-century Norman and Saxon dress, food, tools, cooking utensils, and weapons. It remains the most accurate and lively document to survive from the Middle Ages with detailed information from that period.

Lunch will be served in a local restaurant

Notre Dame Cathedral

Following your lunch, walk to the Notre Dame Cathedral, Bayeux's most important historical building. Upon arrival, you may take a guided tour of the cathedral or opt to explore it independently.

At the conclusion of your visit, re-board the coach for the approximately 1.5-hour return drive to the pier in Honfleur.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking for approximately 1.5km (1 mile) and it is suitable for guests with limited mobility and those who utilise a wheelchair, able to embark/disembark the coach via steps. Only a part of the visit to the museum is wheelchair-accessible. Although no guided commentary is allowed while viewing the tapestry, audio sets are provided.

Carentan’s Sector

Dive into the challenging yet important history of World War II at the Normandy Victory Museum, which tells the story of D-Day, the largest seaborne invasion in history that took place June 6, 1944. Then take a panoramic drive to place yourself in the most important strategic sites of this historic day.

Normandy Victory Museum

Drive 90 minutes from the pier to the Normandy Victory Museum, located in Catz on an old American (runway A10). This museum is one of the most realistic re-creations of D-Day that exists; the hyperreal dioramas offer a chance to place yourself into the scenes of D-Day, especially the "Battle of the Hedgerows" and other lesser-known battles of Normandy. Unlike many museums, the Normandy Victory Museum also pays special attention to the roles women played in battle, most notably in the auxiliary corps of the American forces.

Walk through 17 chronological scenes that offer you an interactive experience of these battles, a truly immersive experience as you walk through the heart of the Normandy countryside. The dioramas contain fifteen vintage vehicles, hundreds of mannequins in uniform and several thousand genuine objects. Taken together, these collections and their arrangement create a realistic background that portrays the hell of this war.

Carentan Strategic Highlights Driving Tour

After your museum visit, take a 75-minute driving tour of Carentan to see beautiful panoramic views and absorb more history in person, right within the context of the strategic highlights related to D-Day. See the "Dead Man's Corner," as well as the cursed drop zone of Angoville-au-Plain. Learn the context you could only understand in person, seeing for yourself the way the landing sites of Omaha and Utah Beaches formed a single front, as soon as Carentan was taken by the 101st Airborne Division.

After your fascinating tour, make the return 90-minute drive back to Cherbourg.

Make Your Own Bread

Get acquainted with making bread the traditional way at the lovely Marie Ravenel watermill in Réthoville. This gorgeous stone structure was built in the 18th century and operated as the Coudrairie watermill for over a century. Its current owners brought the place back to life recently and renamed it for Marie Ravenel, the miller and poetess who lived here for 31 years. On today's excursion learn all about the history of this ancient watermill, the process of milling grains, and get a hands-on lesson in breadmaking.

Hands-On Breadmaking Lesson from Mill's Baker

Drive 45 scenic minutes from the pier to the Marie Ravenel watermill. Meet the resident baker of the mill, who is prepared to reveal the secrets of breadmaking to you. Learn about the nuances of proper dough fermentation, and learn to knead and shape your dough into a ball, a flower, or a brioche. While your bread bakes in the wood-burning oven, take a tour to learn how your flour was traditionally milled right on-site in the watermill.

Tour the Marie Ravenel Watermill and Lunch

Discover the history and ins and outs of this exceptional mill, which has been restored and rebuilt out of iroko (African wood) and housed under a traditional thatched roof. With a diameter of 3.2 m, this particular mill can reach an impressive capacity of 500,000 liters of water! See in person the mill gear system, including the grinding wheels, one of which made the flour you baked with just a few moments ago.
