Eric Roorda, Historian

A Professor of History at Bellarmine University and Director of the Munson Institute of American Maritime Studies at Mystic Seaport Museum, Dr. Eric Paul Roorda is a maritime history specialist whose subjects also include Western civilization and the history of Renaissance Italy.

The author of the prize-winning The Dictator Next Door and the recently published Cuba, America and the Sea, Dr. Roorda is also a contributor to the Oxford Encyclopedia of Maritime History and America and the Sea: A Maritime History and other works on the history of seafaring. 

Eric’s graduate studies at Johns Hopkins University included work in Florence, Italy, at the Singleton Center for Advanced European Studies and at the Istituto Universario Europeo.  He comes from a seafaring family in Holland: his grandfather was a First Engineer in the Dutch Merchant Marine whose ships were sunk twice during World War I, and his great-grandfather worked on Zuiderzee ferries.
