Captain William Wells, Maritime Historian

Whilst he was still a schoolboy, William Wells won a scholarship enabling him to travel from his native New Zealand to England, where he underwent his basic nautical training.  A Master Mariner, former Ship’s Captain and licensed Commercial Marine Pilot, his seafaring career spanned just short of 49 years.

Promoted to Captain by the age of 28, he then became a Trinity House licensed pilot in the Port of London operating on the stretch of river between Gravesend and London Bridge.  During his career as a pilot he also served for 10 years in the Middle East followed by 4 years in the Bahamas where he regularly handled many of the world’s largest ships.

He ended his career as the Senior River Pilot in the Port of London, England.

A published author and a very successful public speaker, he is in regular demand speaking on a range of maritime topics to a wide variety of organisations and learned societies throughout the United Kingdom and the Continent of Europe including BBC Radio and aboard cruise ships.
