Henry and Monica Bradsher, Journalists, Intelligence Experts

Henry has won American national prizes in two different careers, journalism and intelligence, and Monica has won national awards for educational work.

After serving overseas as a U.S. Air Force intelligence officer, Henry reported from South Asia for The Associated Press for five years and then was AP bureau chief in Moscow for 4-1/2 years.  Following a fellowship at Harvard, he became a newspaper correspondent based in Hong Kong for five years and then, as a diplomatic correspondent in Washington for another seven years, traveled the world.  He was selected by the Pulitzer Prize committee on international reporting for his coverage of the 1971 Bangladesh war, and he won the 1974 George Polk Prize for reporting on China.  He was also a commentator for the BBC and CBC for several years, and he has discussed foreign affairs on ABC, CBS, NBC, NPR, and PBS.

When his newspaper closed, Henry was recruited by the CIA for analytical work.  On retirement, he was awarded a senior CIA medal.  He now teaches adult education courses for a university and annually writes 21 articles for the yearbooks of Encyclopaedia Britannica and World Book.  He is the author of two books on Afghanistan and the Soviet Union and recently published The Dalai Lama’s Secret and Other Reporting Adventures.

Monica was a Fulbright scholar in India, where she met and married Henry.  After earning a master’s degree in education at Harvard, she taught in Hong Kong and in Washington and then became an educational editor for the National Geographic Society.  The innovative educational materials that she developed at NGS won U.S. national prizes and have been used by millions of students worldwide.

In addition to lecturing in the community on foreign and cultural affairs, Monica now works as a volunteer organizing community support for public schools.  She and Henry volunteer in tutoring elementary school students and in helping international students at a nearby university.
