Elizabeth Cobbs Hoffman, Historian

An award-winning historian and novelist, Elizabeth Cobbs Hoffman is the Dwight E. Stanford Professor at San Diego State University.  Among other books, she is the author of American Umpire and Broken Promises: A Novel of the Civil War.  She lectures on American and world history.

Elizabeth is co-editor of Major Problems in American History. Her books have won four prizes, including the Allan Nevins Prize for "Literary Distinction in the Writing of History." She served for six years on the Historical Advisory Committee to the U.S. Department of State, and most recently on the jury for the Pulitzer Prize in history. Her current projects include an American history textbook, and a novel on the life of Alexander Hamilton. A native Californian, she enjoys lecturing around the world for Silversea.
