Dr. Andrew J. Pierre, International Relations American Foreign Policy Expert
Andrew J. Pierre is a well-known expert in International Relations and American Foreign Policy, who will join the U.S. Institute of Peace in October 2010 to write a book on nuclear non-proliferation. Earlier he taught at the School of Foreign Service of Georgetown University and served as a consultant to the U.S. Departments of State and Defense. He has been active worldwide in foreign affairs. For example, in October 2009 he was invited by State to speak in Kyrgyzstan and Hungary, and in 2007 he was an international election monitor for the critical election in Ukraine. In 2000 he spent five months in Vietnam, lecturing and consulting at the request of the Ford Foundation, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on issues of international security.
Dr. Pierre was a Senior Associate of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace 1990-98 dealing with issues of international security and arms proliferation. He also helped create the Carnegie Center in Moscow. He was awarded a distinguished fellowship by the U.S. Institute of Peace in 1998-99. Earlier, he was the Director-General of the Atlantic Institute for International Affairs in Paris, Acting Director of Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, Senior Associate at the Hudson Institute and Research Associate at the Brookings Institution. A former Foreign Service Officer, he served at the American Embassy in London and at the Department of State. He also taught at Columbia and Johns Hopkins, and has lectured worldwide. A graduate of Amherst College and the Institut d’Etudes Politiques in Paris, he holds a Ph.D. in political science from Columbia University.
Dr. Pierre is the author or editor of fifteen books, including The Global Politics of Arms Sales, which was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, and Coalition-Building and Maintenance: The Gulf War, Kosovo, Afghanistan and the War on Terrorism. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the International Institute for Strategic Studies. He has testified before the U.S. Congress, and is frequently interviewed on television programs such as PBS Lehrer News Hour, CNN, ABC Nightline, Good Morning America, BBC, Canadian Broadcasting and France-1 in French. He resides in Washington, DC.
