Verla Brown, Guest Lecturer and Artist
Verla Brown is an accomplished lecturer and artist who has been specializing in art appreciation lectures and art workshops around the world. Verla’s preferred art medium is oriental brush painting, and she is well known for her “People Around The World” collection; a 100 painting depiction of characters in native dress performing the daily tasks of their culture. They are shown in many exhibitions as well as added to private collections.
Between providing enrichment, destination lectures, and oriental painting workshops on cruise ships since 1982, Verla has lectured for many Fortune 500 corporations, including Westinghouse, General Electric, Mobile Oil Corporation, and Eli Lilly. She has been a guest lecturer for several universities, highlighting the special significance and impact of art on a global scale. Most recently, she was a lecturer for The University of South Carolina, on the subject of Southeast Asia.
To date, Verla has provided enrichment experiences and destination lectures on 17 world cruises and over 500 cruises on lines in the six-star and above category. While she specializes in art of the Orient, her destination lectures include the Mediterranean, Baltic, Europe, Caribbean, Africa, Asia, Australia, and other areas. Lectures are prepared and tailored to the itinerary of each cruise, and include photographic examples of the culture, architecture, art, and religion of the areas, as well as points of historic interest.
Whether providing enrichment through destination lectures of art history, or oriental brush painting workshops, it is her ultimate goal to present a program that excites. Her desire is to provide knowledge of civilization through the eyes of the artist in a creative historical experience rather than just an academic viewpoint. Through her presentations, she infuses the learner with an understanding and appreciation of history. For the audience, she makes the past live and breathe.
Verla is a graduate of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa; she has Bachelors of Fine Arts Degrees in Art, Art History, and Speech. She and her late husband Bill, have three grown children. She resides on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina.
