James Baer, Historian, Caribbean, Latin American Expert

James Baer, author of numerous journal articles on Latin American history, co-editor of Cities of Hope, and the forthcoming Anarchist Immigrants in Spain and Argentina, is professor of history at Northern Virginia Community College in Alexandria, Virginia. He is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship for College Teachers, the winner of the Davis Prize for best article, and was appointment as Virginia Chancellor’s Commonwealth Professor for 2003-2005. 

Dr. Baer has lectured on cruise ships down the Amazon, around South America, in the Caribbean, and through the Panama Canal. He and his wife have traveled extensively throughout Latin American and the Caribbean by riverboat, train, bus, and horseback.

Dr. Baer studied as an undergraduate at Oberlin College in Ohio and received his Ph.D. in Latin American history from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey.
