John McMichan, M.D., Ph. D., Medical Expert
Born in Melbourne, Australia John C. McMichan, MBBS, PhD obtained his medical education at Monash University and then spent time in Surgery and Surgical Research at the Alfred Hospital, Melbourne. In 1969, he went to sea as Ship’s Surgeon on the SS Francis Drake of the Dominion Far East Line sailing from Australia to the Philippines, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan. On board, he met Jan, the Ship’s Nurse. They married in 1974 and two years later moved to Rochester, Minnesota, USA where John was appointed to the Mayo Clinic.
He specialized in Anesthesiology, Critical Care Medicine and Medical Education. Outside Medicine, their love for passenger ships and the life at sea took him and his wife on many cruises to all parts of the world from the North Cape to Antarctica. In 1987, the Mayo Clinic opened a branch in Scottsdale, Arizona. Attracted by the beautiful climate and the challenge of directing a new department, they moved to the Valley of the Sun that year. John retired from active practice in 1999 and now, when not at sea, he and his wife enjoy a happy life in their home in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona.
His illustrated lecture series entitled “For Your Health: At Home and Abroad” covers a variety of medical topics in a light and informative manner and provides take-home messages for better health and longer life.
