Niki Sepsas, Destination Consultant

A pen and a passport have been the tools of the trade for Niki Sepsas for most of his life.  After college at West Point and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Niki served in the army before embarking on a thirty-year travel career that has taken him to more than 160 countries and each of the world’s seven continents.

Niki began fueling his passion for adventure by signing on to work on offshore oil drilling rigs operating in Southeast Asia, the North Sea, the Middle East, and Prudhoe Bay in Alaska’s Arctic Ocean where his love affair with the 49th state began in 1972. Since then, he has hiked the state’s remote valleys, climbed its majestic mountains, paddled its rampaging rivers, and shown Alaska’s wonders to visitors on dozens of cruises and land tours.

His work as a freelance tour guide for adventure travel companies over the last thirty years has taken him across Alaska and to some of the most scenic corners of the globe.  Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, hot air ballooning across the Serengeti, sea kayaking in Iceland, running with (or from!) the bulls in Spain, paddling canoes on the rivers of Amazonia, drifting down the Nile on a felucca, and hiking the Peruvian Andes to the lost city of Machu Picchu only served to whet his appetite for seeing what lay on the other side of the hill.  When he realized that he enjoyed climbing the hills as much as he enjoyed discovering what lay just beyond, he began working as a freelance writer documenting the world of wonders that beckons to each of us.

As a freelance writer, Niki has had more than 900 articles published in over fifty national, regional, and local magazines and newspapers.  He is a contributing author to the Chicken Soup for the Soul series of books that have made it to the number one spot on the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists.  One of his stories was adapted into a short film that aired on PAX Television.  In addition to having written a dozen coffee table books and ghost written three biographies, Niki’s own first novel, Song of the Gypsy, was published in 2003.  Set in the wild mountains of the Peloponnesos region of Greece, the novel made The Birmingham News’ “Local Best Sellers List” in September of that year.

Niki lives in Birmingham, Alabama and works as a tour guide and freelance writer today.  He also spends about eight months each year working as a destination speaker aboard cruise ships on worldwide itineraries.  When not writing or cruising, Niki can be found climbing, kayaking, dancing, or camping somewhere searching for the perfect sunset.
