North of the Komandor Islands and on the eastern side of stunning Govena Peninsula is Yuzhnaya Glubokaya Bay. The mountains around Yuzhnaya Glubokaya give some protection from the wind and a fishing village was once established at the western end of the bay. Collapsed buildings are all that remain, and a pebble beach in front of the relics almost completely curves around to the mouth of the river. Salmon often gather in the little river to swim upstream, and therefore sightings of Kamchatka brown bear from a viewpoint up on the hill behind the village are not unusual. Just beyond the beach area the vegetation is thick. Succulent roseroot, magenta pixie eyes, and purple-blue Jacob’s ladder grow in amongst a riot of other native plants.
