The port of Tanjung Wangi on the eastern tip of East Java provides access to the culture-rich city of Banyuwangi; the capital city of the regency of the same name. Tanjung Wangi is an active port hosting a ferry service between the islands of Java and Bali. It is also the main jumping-off point for the Baluran and Alas Purwo National Parks. The port is located in a volcanically active area below the breathtaking Ijen plateau with its stunning mountainous scenery. The productive slopes of the extinct volcano of Mount Merapi hold the highly acidic Ijen Crater Lake – the biggest crater lake in Java. Tanjung Wangi is also just across the narrow Bali Strait from the West Bali National Park and its lush mangrove forests.
