Sumunep is in East Java province, located on the eastern end of Madura Island. This region has played an important role in the long history of Madura Island, from the Majapahit Kingdom Era, to the Colonial Era, and up until Independence. Sumenep has some interesting historical building like Old Kraton Palace with its Museum and unusual style of an old great mosque, with both Chinese and European influences. Traditional art, cultural attractions and bull races are the special features of this region. Unique art and crafts include ladies jewellery such as bracelets, binggels (gold ankle rings), wood and stone carvings, and a unique style of batik. In the performing arts, Sumenep is famous for its muangsangkal and mask dances, which can only be seen within the royal palace. However, the most unique attraction is the traditional bull racing, which is not found anywhere else in the world.
