Ponta Delgada, Azores
Volcanic firepower has carved these stunning islands, and a journey up to Caldeira das Sete Cidades is a must do, where you can hike beside the water-filled crater, and admire views of steep green walls, and the uninterrupted Atlantic Ocean stretching beyond them. Lagoa de Fogo offers yet more humbling views, with the crater lake dropping off sharply to rippled ocean far below.
The hot springs at Poca Da Dona, meanwhile, are perfect for sizzling away any tired muscles from your hikes, as you bathe in mineral rich pools and feel your stresses evaporating. Nearby, you'll also find the wonderful Terra Nostra Gardens, where streams weave between exotic plants, and a large, geothermal swimming pool invites you to bask in its heated water. See the geysers, which erupt gasses and steam into the air on a regular basis, and observe the earth’s party trick - the ability to cook food, simply by burying it just below the surface, and letting the volcanic heat do the rest.
