Mytilene is a beautiful town, rich in local colour. Today it has around 35,000 inhabitants. As you look at it from the ship, for the first time, you see to your right on a pine-covered hill, the historic fortress of Mytilene and before you in the main harbor with its pier, the colourful caiques, the large sailboats, the shops and the hotels.
The church of Agios Therapon dominates the area with its impressive architecture and stately domes. Behind the town and all around it are its mountains densely carpeted with pines and olives.
There is a great deal for one to see in this town. Next to where the ferries dock, there is the Archaeological museum. North of the museum is the neighborhood of Kioski with its old mansions going up the hill towards the fortress of Mytilene. The Genoan Francesco Gattiluci renovated the Byzantine fortress in 1373.
Guests can wander in the old part of the town to browse through the shops and enjoy a local lunch at the area restaurants where local cuisine is served as well as meat and fish dishes.
