La Possession is a French influenced port city on the northwestern side of La Reunion. Two national parks have been created to protect the island’s natural wealth and UNESCO has given World Heritage status to the “Pitons, cirques and remparts of Reunion Island”. For birders, the “La Roche Ecrite Nature Reserve” is of prime interest as it was created on the slopes of the 2,276 meter Roche Ecrite next to La Possession to protect the endemic and endangered Reunion Cuckooshrike. The central highlands of Reunion are dominated by spectacular rugged peaks of dormant or extinct volcanoes that cradle huge amphitheaters known as cirques. The mountains tower to over three thousand meters (10,000 feet) and beautiful waterfalls plummet down steep slopes.
