Costa Maya is south of Cancun and the Riviera Maya, to the east it has beautiful beaches and to the west it is surrounded by virgin rain forest.
Costa Maya also includes a chain of reefs that is perfect for those people who enjoy diving or snorkeling In front of Costa Maya is Chinchorro, part of the second largest reef in the world and it's Mexico's largest coral atoll, 240 square miles of natural beauty. There are several shipwreck, some of them hundreds years old, with canons and anchors.
Mahahual recently became the newest cruise ship destination in the Caribbean. The south of Quintana Roo was completely ignored by investors; however now Mahajual is the center of Costa Maya, Mexico's hottest tourist destination.
Going Ashore in Costa Maya
The ship is scheduled to dock at the Cruise Ship Terminal located 2 miles from town. Taxis are readily available.
There are plenty of shops at the port area. Resort wear, jewelry and a wide range of souvenir items and handicrafts can be found in the many stores. The local currency is the peso and US Dollars are widely accepted.
Typical Mexican food as well as international cuisine and seafood offer a variety of dining options in the fisherman village just next to the pier. Excellent local beer and frosty margaritas help quench the thirst.
