Chan May, (Hue/Danang)

Tour description

Chan May, Vietnam

Centrally located between historic cities, the working port of Chan May is the gateway to Da Nang, Hoi An, and Hue, the former imperial city.

Da Nang, home to the famous China Beach, has one of the most beautiful stretches of sand in central Vietnam and can be reached after an approximate one-hour drive from Chan May Port via either the Hai Van Tunnels or Hai Van Pass. It was on Da Nang's coast where the first U.S. troops landed on March 8, 1965. As the war progressed, the airport's runway was extended to become the longest in all of Southeast Asia. Da Nang fell to the Viet Cong in March 1975; this signified South Vietnam's defeat in the war. Despite its war-torn history, Da Nang is one of the most progressive cities in Vietnam, taking advantage of the new free-market principle. Charming Hoi An is an ancient trading town with shops, art galleries and restaurants as located approximately a 90-minute drive away.

The area's highlight, without a doubt, has to be the city of Hue, the capital of Vietnam from 1802 to 1945, and UNESCO heritage site. Its Royal Palace, named the Forbidden Purple City, is just as mysterious as Beijing's Forbidden City, and is currently being restored to its former image. Located in the province of Thua Thien Hue, along the Perfume River, Hue is in the central region of Vietnam. This province, with its population of nearly one million people has a history that dates back from 2500 to 2800 years ago. The ancient people of this area probably developed into two communities, the Cham and the ethnic minority groups living in Truong Son Range. Findings such as collected relics of the Stone Age also prove that Thua Thien Hue's history may date back even further. In the Tet Offensive of 1968, during the Battle of Hue, the city suffered considerable damage and restorations of the old city still continue today.

Whether your travels take you from Chan May to Hue, Hoi An, or Da Nang, these historic cities of Vietnam provide a rich and culturally rewarding experience.
