Batumi is a seaside city on the Black Sea Coast, and the capital of Adjara, an autonomous republic in Southwest Georgia. With its large port and commercial centre, Batumi is also the last stop of the Trans Caucasian Railroad and the Baku Oil Pipeline. It is situated approximately 12 miles (19 kilometres) from the Turkish border, in a subtropical zone that is rich in citrus fruit and tea. Industries include oil refineries, shipbuilding, food processing, and light manufacturing. At the same time, the export of tea, citrus, and other products from the region by the sea plays an important role in the economy of the town.
In 1878, after 300 years of Turkish power, Batumi passed into Russian hands. Today, Batumi Port is connected with all of the seacoast nations of the world by seaways. It is the link connecting the sea, river, railway, automobile, air, and pipeline modes of transport.
