Ballestas Islands,

Located off the south coast of Peru, the Ballestas Islands are one of this region’s most beautiful natural attractions. The islands teem with wildlife, with one of the greatest concentration of birds (including penguins) amidst dramatic mineral-colored sand dunes peppered with ancient fossils. Other wildlife sightings may include sea lions, cormorants, Blue-footed Boobies, terns, pelicans and Humboldt Penguins. Another attraction in this area is El Candelabro, a large-scale geoglyph carved into the rocky island terrain (in approximately 200 BCE) that may have been an important reference point in the early days of marine navigation.
