Atka Island, Alaska
With an area just over 1000 square kilometers or 404 square miles, Atka is the largest of the Andreanov Islands and the 22nd largest island of the US. Korovin volcano is an impressive sentinel and reaches dizzying heights of more than 1,500 meters or 5,000 feet. Reindeer roam the island, which has barely 100 inhabitants. The Second World War played a significant part of the island’s history and Atka is one of three places in Alaska that are recognized in the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument. This is noteworthy as the monument only recognizes nine sites in three different states.
