Expedition Svalbard II

 

 

Day 1 - June 26, 2013 -  Tromso, Norway 

We’re a very international team, looking forward to an interesting and, hopefully, rewarding expedition-cruise to Svalbard via Bear Island.

Day 2 - June 27, 2013 -  En route to Bear Island, Svalbard  

 

Kara Weller, our Expedition Leader, came over the PA system and announced that two humpback whales, a mother with calf, and a pod of White-Beaked dolphins were ahead of the ship.

Day 3 - June 28, 2013 - Bear Island

Imagine kilometer after kilometer of sheer, rocky cliffs rising steeply out of the sea and taller than any 10-story office building.

Day 4 - June 29, 2013 -  Burgerbukta, Gnalodden, Hornsund, Svalbard 

 

Guests were ready for their first adventure; an approximately one and a half hour to the glaciers, driving around blue icebergs and observing the bird fauna in this fjord.

Day 5 - June 30, 2013 -  Today’s Port en route between Kapp Lee and Diskobukta, Edgeøya, Svalbard 

 

The mist continued to swirl and boil as we proceeded south down the coast of Edgeøya, to the open bay of Diskobukta.

Day 6 - July 1, 2013 -  Bråsvellbreen, Wilhelmøya and Alkefjellet 

 

The beautiful sunny conditions we had experienced during last night’s encounter with a mother and cub polar bear continued well into the early morning hours.

Day 7 - July 2, 2013 - Faksevågen & Palanderbukta, Svalbard

This barren land looks quite sterile and empty at first, but once you start walking around, you realise that you could actually spend more than a couple hours exploring it and not get bored. Not only does it has a long and beautiful beach, but it is just full of surprises.

Day 8 - July 3, 2013 -  At sea, Svalbard, Norway 

 

Another early start, but we were rewarded with a view of ice all around us. M/v Silver Explorer had made its way past 80° N in search of seals, walrus and polar bears. It did not take long and Karolina, our bear-guard from Longyearbyen, spotted a bear in the distance.

Day 9 - July 4, 2013 - Ny Alesund & 14th of July Glacier, Svalbard

It was a warm arctic morning, and our guests had a great time just meandering around taking in the beautiful scenery and wildlife.

Day 10 - July 5, 2013 -  St. Johns Fjorden, Svalbard 

Often this location is focused on the beautiful vegetation along with a bit of mass wasting / slow landslide geology but today was special. I looked up the mountain slope just in time to see a reindeer slowly crossing the area between two groups of our guests!
