Day 1 - June 16, 2013 -  Today’s Port Longyearbyen, Svalbard 

 

The Longyearbyen museum is a triumph in the interpretive displays of the Arctic environment.

Day 2 - June 17, 2013 -  Smeerenburg Fjord, Svalbard 

What a start to the cruise!

Day 3 - June 18, 2013 -  Raudfjorden, Magdalenefjorden, Svalbard  

 

Gullybukta in the last few years has become a hauled out place for walruses. For our guests, this was an excellent opportunity to hear something about the history of Svalbard and also to see another enigmatic animal of this region.

Day 4 - June 19, 2013 - North-East Spitsbergen, Krossfjorden, 14th of July glacier, Ny Alesund. Svalbard 

 ... one of the few places where people can safely walk around on the ice and experience a close encounter with a glacier.

Day 5 - June 20, 2013 -  Hornsund, Svalbard 

 

We could clearly see how the Kittiwakes were circling in great numbers in front of the cliff, while a Glaucous Gull was nesting on a rock close to the shore.

Day 6 - June 21, 2013 - Kapp Lee & Sundneset, Svalbard

There is just something really unique about floating in calm seas, surrounded with broken up bits of sea ice, with the fog rolling in around us, looking at a polar bear lying down on the distant ridge with walrus swimming in the waters nearby.

Day 7 - June 22, 2013 - Hinlopenstretet, Svalbard

Soon enough our intended destination, Brasvellbreen, appeared later in the afternoon. This magnificent section of glacial ice cliffs is 170 km long and is the longest such feature in the Northern Hemisphere of this planet.

Day 8 - June 23, 2013 -  Today’s Port Diskobukta, Edgeøya, Svalbard 

 

Svalbard now revealed itself in a somewhat mocking tone, dark scree-sided mountains interspaced with glaciers running down to the sea.

Day 9 - June 24, 2013 -  Bear Island  

 

Bear Island is a magical place. This small island has many jagged cliffs on the southern end, and just after breakfast we launched the zodiacs and took off to explore its wild coast on a 1.5-hour cruise.
