Day 1 - June 4, 2013 -  Bergen, Norway 

 

It was one of those rare beautiful sunny days in Bergen and the first day of the new voyage up to the Arctic region.

Day 2 - June 5, 2013 - Geiranger Fjord, Norway

The majestic fjords of Norway awaited us this morning and the Silver Explorer slowly entered the Geiranger Fjord around 0700. This fjord is home to some of the most spectacular scenery in the world, and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 3 - June 6, 2013 - Alesund, Norway

Runde Island is well known for its amazing birdlife. There are an estimated 500,000 – 700,000 seabirds nesting on this island, including the funny little puffins, the elegant black and white guillemots and their close relative the razorbills, the slender common shags, and, of course, one of the regions largest nesting sites of the magnificent northern gannet.

Day 4 - June 7, 2013 - Afternoon & evening at Trondheim, Norway

The Silver Explorer was making her way towards Trondheim, the third largest town in Norway with a population of about 170,000 and also the site of the old capital of the country.

Day 5 - June 8, 2013 - At Sea off the West Coast of Norway en route Lofoten Islands

After a great day hiking nearby or touring the beautiful city of Trondheim, a day at sea might seem a bit less active.

Day 6 - June 9, 2013 - Today’s Port Leknes, Lofoten

Nusfjord is a UNESCO site, with beautifully preserved fishermen’s huts, or rorbu, dating from the nineteenth century

Day 7 - June 10, 2013 - Today’s Port Tromso, Norway

Tromso was hiding in the misty fjords when the Silver Explorer berthed close to the town centre.

Day 8 - June 11, 2013 - at sea in the morning, Bear Island, Svalbard

Right on time, the Silver Explorer anchored in the Sorhamna Bay of Bear Island.

Day 9 - June 12, 2013 - Svalbard

We continued to watch the magnificent snowy peaks of Svalbard as we cruised with Prins Karls Foreland (a large island on the western side of the Svalbard archipelago) on our starboard side.

Day 10 - June 13, 2013 -  North-East Spitsbergen, Liefdefjorden, Svalbard 

 

Many guests came out to witness their first ice navigation experience, and all eyes were scouting every single floe in search of Polar bears, the main wildlife attraction in this part of the world.

Day 11 - June 14, 2013 -  Monacobreen, Svalbard  

 

The scouting activity was a success! Chris Srigley (one of our Bear Guards) and I spotted a female bear walking along the ice edge.

Day 12 - June 15, 2013 -  Entering St. Jonsforden, Svalbard 

 

We were very pleasantly surprised to discover more than double the expected number of walrus all packed into a tight and very warm social grouping.
