Day 1 - July 5, 2012 - Tromsø, Norway 

Our Expedition Leader Robin West, explained the safety procedures in place on board the Silver Explorer, and towards the end of this exercise our guests were taken outside and shown the way to the lifeboats.

Day 2 - July 6, 2012 - Day at Sea – En route from Tromso to Bear Island 

This Bio-security check is done at the beginning of every trip to minimise the risk of introducing alien species to this remote and pristine area.

Day 3 - July 7, 2012 - Bear Island, Svalbard, Norway 

After taking a few photos, we headed out and around the point to the really scenic part of Bear Island – the 200-300m high sheer cliffs! It was stunning.

Day 4 - July 8, 2012 - Along Edge of Sea Ice off Edgeoya, Svalbard 

Imagine my surprise that on the first pass there was a polar bear visible as he walked across the ice!!

Day 5 - July 9, 2012 - Nordauslandet 

At some stage, a few curious walruses that were swimming along the shore, actually came onto the beach.

Day 7 - July 11, 2012 - Monacobreen, Svalbard 

Initially, we did not have luck with our primary mission, but we saw plenty of interesting things – particularly birdlife.

Day 8 - July 12, 2012 - Off Northern Coast of Lagoya, Svalbard 

Soon enough the radios crackled as one of the Expedition Team spotted a bear on the ice, then another, and two more, and one additional bear seen in the distance but all bears were initially seen at the far horizon.

Day 9 - July 13, 2012 - Raudfjorden, Svalbard 

Once ashore, we took our guests on guided interpretive walks up to a hill behind the landing site and down to a frozen lake on the other side, enjoying the beautiful scenery, geological formations like block fields, troll bread, frost heaving and stone rings, plus the ever present birdlife.

Day 10 - July 14, 2012 - Ny Alesund, 14 of July Glacier, Svalbard 

So as groups slowly came back to return on board, I went past some small cliffs just a few hundred meters from the landing site, and we got excellent views of Puffins, Guillemots, and Glaucous Gulls.
