Lisbon to Portsmouth

 

 

Day 1 - May 12, 2012 - Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is a beautiful place with soft pavements (true) and lots to see and do, but not quite so enticing on a rainy Monday.

Day 2 - May 8, 2012 - Leixoes, Portugal 

After a coach tour of Porto that included the cathedral and the bishop’s palace, our three groups visited in different order the church of St Francis, the riverfront quarter and a wine cellar.

Day 3 - May 9, 2012 - La Coruña, Spain 

Our local guide tried to bring the atmosphere of the medieval days closer to our guests, pointing out important buildings like the monastery of San Praio, one of the oldest in Santiago, the Praza das Praterias and, of course, the Hostel de los Reyes Catolicos, which was, in that time, an inn and hospital for the pilgrims.

Day 4 - May 10, 2012 - At sea

The coast of Spain was clearly visible as we sailed eastwards towards our destination at Santander, which we will reach tomorrow.

Day 5 - May 11, 2012 - Santander, Spain 

Santander is extremely attractive in the early morning light, and we had an early start for our excursion to Santillana del Mer for the medieval village.

Day 6 - May 12, 2012 - Bordeaux, France 

We docked in the port slightly earlier than forecast, at 12.30 pm, and after lunch we disembarked for a walking tour of the beautiful city of Bordeaux, which, thanks to the marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine to Henry II, had the good fortune to be English for 300 years.

Day 7 - May 13, 2012 - Bordeaux – St Emilion 

We bade farewell to St Emilion and travelled a short distance to reach a chateau with its accompanying vineyards.

Day 8 - May 14, 2012 - Quiberon, France 

Carnac stones get everyone interested.jpg
The site was very impressive and just to imagine how old these alignments are and the myth behind them makes it even more impressive.

Day 9 - May 15, 2012 - At sea, en route Saint-Malo, Brittany 

They were cooking up gravlax and Kaiserschmarren, both of which are a complete mystery to me and the demonstration merely convinced me to leave these matters to the experts and to buy it ready-made whenever possible.

Day 10 - May 16, 2012 - St Malo, France 

One can only be impressed by the effort that went into the construction of this towering edifice over many centuries.

Day 11 - May 17, 2012 - St. Peter Port, Guernsey, Channel Islands 

Right from the beginning the views over the cliffs were stunning. A rough coast with sandy beaches in between and adorned with flowers in all colors.

Day 12 - July 13, 2010 - Honfleur – Bayeux/Normandy Beaches 

After breakfast I joined the group heading for Bayeux to see the legendary tapestry. The coach drive took just over an hour through the fabulous French countryside.
