Santa Cruz de Tenerife to Lisbon

 

 

Day 1 - April 25, 2012 - Santa Cruz, Tenerife, Spain 

Guests arrived throughout the afternoon and at 4 pm boarding was finished for our expedition voyage from Tenerife to Lisbon.

Day 2 - April 26, 2012 - La Gomera, Canary Islands 

As we emerged, the transition took my breath away, suddenly there were trees – conifers and laurel trees, and everything was so green!

Day 3 - April 27, 2012 - Lanzarote - Canary Islands, Spain 

The first excursion of the day took us south to the spectacular lava fields of Timanfaya National Park, a series of lava fields, cinder cones, lava tubes and flows of basalt, which looked as if frozen in time.

Day 4 - April 28, 2012 - At sea, en route Madeira 

A day at sea is usually quiet, but there was a lot going on today.

Day 5 - April 29, 2012 - Funchal, Madeira

We then wound our way down to the picturesque fishing village of Camara de Lobo.

Day 6 - April 30, 2012 - Deserta Grande and Porto Santo, Madeira, Portugal 

A stunning view down to the little village of Porto Santo and the fabulous 9 km long sandy beach was the reward for the effort to get up to the top

Day 7 - May 1, 2012 - At Sea

A stunning view down to the little village of Porto Santo and the fabulous 9 km long sandy beach was the reward for the effort to get up to the top A special lunch was offered out on deck– Frühschoppen, a fabulous German feast with beer, wieswurst, bratwurst and knackwurst (sausages), sauerkraut and many other delights.

Day 8 - May 2, 2012 -  Safi and Marrakech, Morocco

 We then took a stroll through the labyrinth of alleyways in the ancient, 12th-century Medina. It was truly a multi-sensorial experience, the colours, the smells, the sounds, everything.

Day 9 - May 3, 2012 -  At sea, en route Tangier

Whilst the rest of the ship’s life rolled on, the swell was gradually reducing, so you can imagine the excitement when Conrad announced that the much-vaunted regatta could go ahead after all.

Day 10 - May 4, 2012 -  Tangiers, Morocco

The town itself stands on a rocky plateau in an area rich in fields of oranges, pomegranates and almonds, and combines the modern supermarkets, petrol stations and internet cafes with the old town and its souk, medina and warren of narrow streets crammed with leather workers, metal smiths, carpet weavers and assorted artisans whose methods have changed little since medieval times.

Day 11 - May 5, 2012 - Cadiz and Seville

I could not believe the sheer size and richness of decoration that greeted us as we entered the Seville cathedral.

Day 12 - May 6, 2012 - Portimao, Portugal

Around the castle, as by the cape, the whole vegetation was in flower. It was a wonderful mixture of red, purple, blue, yellow and white colors.
