This day at sea started calm and sunny. I enjoyed breakfast and later, Expedition Leader Conrad Combrink gave a fascinating insight into the history of the Silver Explorer from its earlier incarnations as Dream 21 and World Explorer, to the present-day luxury expedition ship, detailing how each part of the ship was redesigned and realised. He then explained how each year's itineraries are planned and budgeted for, looking forward to 2013 and with a sneak preview of the exciting destinations planned for 2014. Then, Head Sommelier Kire invited everyone to the Panorama Lounge for a Connoisseur Wine Tasting Seminar, sampling some of the lovely wines that Silver Explorer has available.

A special lunch was offered out on deck– Frühschoppen, a fabulous German feast with beer, wieswurst, bratwurst and knackwurst (sausages), sauerkraut and many other delights. After this, our onboard geologist, Juan Carlos Restrepo gave an introduction to geology, talking about the origin of the planet, how different types of rock are formed and looking at what happens beneath out feet, focusing on plate tectonics. Many took advantage of the wonderful sunny weather by relaxing on deck.

Later in the afternoon I sampled a special tea in the Panorama Lounge, keeping the German theme, it featured Kaiserschmarn, a lovely pancake with fruit, difficult to resist! Then it was time for my talk on Identifying Seabirds, looking at the different groups of seabirds in the North Atlantic, and the principles used when trying to distinguish them. I attended the First Timer's Cocktail Party and the day's activities finished with a briefing on tomorrow's day in Marrakesh and a recap from several members of the Expedition Team, followed by dinner.
