Ushuaia to Santiago

 

 

Day 1 - February 29, 2012 - Ushuaia, Argentina 

All embarkation went smoothly, and at 16.45 boarding was finished and we could begin our journey from Ushuaia northward through the Chilean Fjords.

Day 2 - March 1, 2012 - Garibaldi Glacier, Chile

The Garibaldi glacier comes as a surprise when one sails into this narrow fjord; it lies at the end of it and sits at the foothills of the Darwin ranges, the southernmost extremity of the Andes.

Day 3 - March 2, 2012 - Punta Arenas, Chile

While most chose to sleep away the time, others gazed out the windows of the bus and took in the wild Patagonian pampas one last time.

Day 4 - March 3, 2012 - At sea in the Chilean Fjords

Once we reached the end of the navigable water we stayed for a while looking at a glacier coming down the mountainside to the sea that had some amazing blue colouration in its middle section.

Day 5 - March 4, 2012 - Pio XI Glacier, Chile 

Almost everyone decided to have a look at the ice, and disembarked after a 45-minute Zodiac-cruise to inspect an ice-cave not too far from the landing site.

Day 6 - March 5, 2012 - At Sea, en route to Ushuaia, Argentina

A “real” expedition day was planed for today. The word “real” stands in this case for the fact that none of us has been there before.

Day 7 - March 6, 2012 - At Sea en route to Castro

The winds had died down and the seas were calming, and by 3pm we were once again back in the protection of the fjords.

Day 8 - March 7, 2012 - Castro, Chile

After some rainy moments down in the Chilean Fjords today’s weather was a great pleasure to all of our guests.

Day 9 - March 8, 2012 - Puerto Montt, Chile

We started the excursion heading towards Llanquihue Lake, South America’s third-largest natural lake, dominated by the impressive snow-capped Osorno volcano.

Day 10 - March 9, 2012 - Niebla/Valdivia, Chile

With a blend of influences from the native Mapuche, Spanish settlers and German immigrants, Valdivia is full of intriguing legends and an abundance of history.

Day 11 - March 10, 2012 - En route to Valparaiso, Chile 

As is the case on sea days, I was up on deck at the start of the day to see what seabirds were nearby.
