Ushuaia to Ushuaia

 

 

Day 1 - January 3, 2012 - Ushuaia, Argentina

The Silver Explorer left the pier at 18.00 and we sailed out into the Beagle Channel for the rough waters of the Drake Passage.

Day 2 - January 4, 2012 - At sea, Drake Passage

Quite a lot of people went to the outer decks in the morning and enjoyed the sight of dozens of seabirds soaring around the ship.

Day 3 - January 5, 2012 - En route to Antarctica

The Captain and his Bridge crew slowed down the Silver Explorer and for almost an hour we appreciated the whales that seemed to want to “play” with the vessel, enabling us fantastic up-close views.

Day 4 - January 6, 2012 - Weddell Sea en route from vicinity of Seymour Island to Paulet Island

Observing multiple Emperor Penguins in the wild is truly a special and magical sight and one made more special knowing that it was only the second time in history that the Silver Explorer had been able to accomplish this difficult feat in such a challenging part of the world.

Day 5 - January 7, 2012 - Juan Carlos Restrepo, Geologist

For most of our guests, this was their first close encounter with penguins and one could feel their excitement.

Day 6 - January 8, 2012 - Cuverville Island, Neko Harbour, Lemaire Channel, Antarctic Peninsula

We slowly crept up on them and the whales slowed down quite a bit giving us fantastic views of their flukes as they dove deeply to feed on krill in these rich waters.

Day 7 - January 9, 2012 - Cape Renard and Port Lockroy

However, that did not stop any of the guests from getting out and visiting this quaint old station, with its museum and souvenir shop. And…of course...to post postcards.

Day 8 - January 10, 2012 - Deception Island and Yankee Harbour, South Shetlands  

The first guests came to the shore and watched Gentoo and some Chinstrap Penguins on their nests.

Day 9 - January 11, 2012 - Drake Passage

These windy days bring out the best in these species with albatrosses, petrels both large and small coming up close to the stern of the ship before shearing away in the wind again.

Day 10 - January 12, 2012 - Ushuaia, Argentina

How quickly we forget and how forceful the surprise when we begin to see trees and shrubs along the shoreside of the channel!
