Tromso to Longyearbyen

 

 

Day 1 - July 3, 2011 - Tromso, Norway

At 15:50 the last line was cast, and together with the pilot, and the help of a local tug boat, Captain Peter maneuvered the Silver Explorer against the current into the channel between the island of Tromso and mainland Norway.

Day 2 - July 4, 2011 - At Sea

“First Timer Cocktail Party” took place, this time in The Theatre, as there was a big group of “First Timers” on board.

Day 3 - July 5, 2011 - Bjørnøya, Svalbard

Guillemots, both common and Brunnich’s were also present in the thousands. These small seabirds look very much like penguins, especially when they are sitting on rocky ledges with their black heads and backs and white fronts.

Day 4 - July 6, 2011 - Hornsund Fjord - Burgerbukta & Gashamna, Svalbard

She was lying down on the fast ice about 100 metres from the edge of the ice, she would constantly lift and turn her head, sit up and look our way.

Day 5 - July 7, 2011 - Ingebrigtsenbukta, Bellsund, Spitsbergen, Svalbard

Along the way we had simply great views of snow buntings, purple sandpipers and Arctic skuas. The first two are somewhat rare so I was quite pleased that we were lucky enough to observe these beautiful creatures and discuss their feeding and nesting behaviors.

Day 6 - July 8, 2011 - Woodfjord

When my second group came back, we had a great view of two Minke Whales quite close to the boats, as well as a Bearded Seal in the water, who was not bothered by us at all.

Day 7 - July 9, 2011 - Torellneset, Nordaustlandet and at sea

A walrus seemed to be quite curious and approached the boat but lost interest after a couple of minutes and swam towards the place where its “friends” had already hauled out onto the beach.

Day 8 - July 10, 2011 - Smeerenburg, Svalbard, Norway

A harbor seal was patrolling along the shore, and several Arctic Terns were seen nesting on the ground, ready to attack in case someone came too close.

Day 9 - July 11, 2011 - Ny Alesund, Spitsbergen, Norway

Early in the morning Silver Explorer sailed into Krossfjorden to go at anchor nearby the 14th of July Glacier. In my opinion, this landing site is one of the most beautiful and fascinating locations in Svalbard.

Day 10 - July 12, 2011 - St Johns Fjord and Alkhornet, Svalbard

Some unusual species were spotted as well such as the polar campion, which caused many of our guests to get down on their knees for better photographs of this pretty flower.
