Day 1 - June 8, 2011 - Alongside in Travemünde, Germany

Unfortunately, however, our sailaway from the delightful town of Travemünde was marred by the torrential, almost monsoon-esque downpour that had been threatening all day.

Day 2 - June 9, 2011 - Helsingor, Denmark

Our first stop was the magnificent Kronborg Castle, built between 1574 - 85 on the site of a still older castle, with its location chosen to protect the seaward entrance to the Baltic Sea.

Day 3 - July 13, 2010 - Kristiansand, Norway

Our bus tour brought us first to the Vest-Agder county museum, an open-air museum with charming old buildings in a lush green environment.

Day 4 - June 11, 2011 - At sea and Bergen, Norway

With the sun still shining and the bridges and outlying views of Bergen coming closer, most people put on jackets against the wind and came out on deck to admire the views.

Day 5 - June 12, 2011 - Bergen, Norway

From walking through some of the narrow alleyways, we made our way to Bryggen, which is the old Hanseatic quarter and now a World Heritage Site.

Day 6 - June 13, 2011 - Geiranger, Norway

We sailed up the Geiranger Fjord with the aid of our pilot and many of us were on the outside decks to witness the scenery.

Day 7 - June 14, 2011 -  Trondheim, Norway

 

I arrived in time to see three coaches departing for the first of the optional tours — to the magnificent Niadros Cathedral, then by the antique Fanrem train to the copper mines at Loekken.

Day 8 - June 15, 2011 - At Sea, en route to Lofoten Islands

Whilst they were enjoying their drinks and refreshments on the deck, Toby and I took to the Zodiac so that we were able to photograph the Silver Explorer as she crossed the circle – luckily it was perfect weather!

Day 9 - June 16, 2011 - Leknes, Lofoten Islands, Norway

This picturesque small settlement with all its red-coloured wooden houses at the end of the Nusfjord gives a nice example of a typical historic fishing village in the northern area of Norway.

Day 10 - June 17, 2011 - Tromso, Norway

The bright blue Himalayan poppy was quite spectacular to see with its very vivid and bright shade of blue. Strolling among the various sections of beautifully laid-out garden was pleasant in the sunshine and all too soon our time to board the buses was once again upon us.

Day 11 - June 18, 2011 - Bear Island, en route to Svalbard

This is always one of the expedition teams favourite Zodiac cruises, and today the weather was just right for a brilliant tour.

Day 12 - June 19, 2011 - Today’s Port Hornsund

Shortly after breakfast the first group of guests was out in the Zodiacs as we explored the coastline looking for wildlife and marveling at the mountains and glaciers.

Day 13 - June 21, 2011 - Poolepynten and St. Jonsfjord, Spitsbergen

Today the port of call is Poolepynten, a small narrow pointed spit that protrudes from the eastern side of Prins Karlfordland and is well known for being a Walrus haul out.

Day 14 - June 21, 2011 - At Sea north of Spitsbergen

Towards 16.00 we get some expansive areas of drifting sea ice and with the sun now fully illuminating the sea, ice and distant land the views are quite stunning.

Day 15 - June 22, 2011 - 14 of July Glacier and Ny Ålesund, Svalbard

sparkling gold light reflecting off the water illuminated the beautiful landscapes of Svalbard as we made our way south towards our first destination of 14th of July Glacier.
