Ushuaia to Ushuaia

 

 

Day 1 - January 5, 2011 -  Ushuaia, Argentina 

 

Turnaround day is often thought to be a fairly quiet day, but behind the scenes there are in fact a great deal of important activities that need to be accomplished before we depart Ushuaia, cruise down the Beagle Channel and head out into the Drake Passage en route to that magical destination of Antarctica, a land of wonder and beauty.

Day 2 - January 6, 2011 -  Drake Passage 

 

Wandering Albatross, Black-browed Albatross and Giant Petrels made use of the wind shear our ship created.

Day 3 - January 7, 2011 -  Drake Passage and South Shetland Islands 

 

While we were approaching our landing sight, a large group of Humpback whales were spotted, and the Captain decided to take the ship closer and get a better look at these magnificent creatures.

Day 4 - January 8, 2011 - Brown Bluff and Kinnes Cove

The sun was still shining and it lit up the icebergs in shades of white and blue.

Day 5 - January 9, 2011 -  Cuverville and Port Lockroy 

 

Sun-bathed glaciers poured down from the mountains into the sea, and icebergs dotted the channel as we approached Cuverville Island, our morning’s destination.

Day 6 - January 10, 2011 -  Pleneau Island and Vernadsky Research Station 

 

Our guests were the first to sail through the Lemaire Channel with Silversea this season, and nearly everyone was out on the decks to enjoy the spectacular scenery.

Day 7 - January 11, 2011 -  Base Brown, Paradise Bay, Antarctica 

 

Our Expedition Leader had decided to take advantage of an opportunity to have a leisurely morning in the Gerlache Strait looking for Orcas (commonly known as “Killer Whales”) and other whales.

Day 8 - January 12, 2011 -  Telefon Bay, Deception Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica 

 

Since safety is always Silversea’s top priority, Captain Stahlberg made the decision that it was a better course of action to cancel our planned landing at an abandoned whaling station elsewhere on Deception Island and instead depart.

Day 9 - January 13, 2011 -  Drake Passage 

 

It’s hard to believe that the trip is almost over, seems like I had just been greeting the guests at the gangway!

Day 10 - January 14, 2011 -  Crossing the Drake Passage en route to Ushuaia 

 

By lunchtime the ship was cruising along calmer waters and finally many people who had been holed up in their suites for the rough seas, ventured back out.
