Santiago (Valparaiso) to Ushuaia

 

 

Day 1 - October 30, 2010 - Valparaiso

By midday new guests were arriving at Valparaiso’s Port for the Chilean Fiords Cruise.

Day 2 - October 31, 2010 - At Sea

At 11:00 clock, some guests headed in the direction Panorama Lounge where chef Anne-Mari Cornelius showed off her skills at a cooking demonstration.

Day 3 - November 1, 2010 - Niebla and Valdivia

I was delighted to have 30 minutes to wander through the fish market and enjoy watching the sea lions, Peruvian pelicans, brown-hooded gulls, neotropic cormorants and many other birds hanging around at the water’s edge, hoping for a hand-out.

Day 4 - November 2, 2010 - Puerto Montt

We were greeted by Llamas, including one very friendly one called Gaston who seemed to have an eye for the ladies.

Day 5 - November 3, 2010 -  Castro, Chiloe

With guidance from ornithologist Chris Harbard, good sightings were made of a Chucao Tapaculo and Slender Billed Parakeets.

Day 6 - November 4, 2010 - Aiken del Sur Private Park, Puerto Chacabuco, Chile

We could also hear and see a variety of bird life – nearly everyone got good views of the chucao tapaculo, with its beautiful red breast. These birds were not at all shy, but escorted us along the trail, tantalizing us with regular glimpses.

Day 7 - November 5, 2010 - Baker Channel

By 3:00 pm we were sitting in a wide section of the channel surrounded by small blue-green icebergs.

Day 8 - November 6, 2010 - Pio XI Glacier

Named for Ambrogio Damiano Achille Ratti, the XI (11th) Pope who held the position from 1929 through to his death in 1939, the Pio XI glacier is a truly beautiful sight.

Day 9 - November 7, 2010 - At sea

Another spectacular day at sea, cruising through the Chilean Fjords. Although cloudy, the sun occasionally broke through to shine on the snow-capped mountains to either side of the ship.

Day 10 - November 8, 2010 - Punta Arenas

The penguins were indifferent to the wind and went on with their routine of feeding and tending their eggs in the burrows.

Day 11 - November 9, 2010 - Garibaldi Fjord

The Prince Albert II navigated slowly through silty water. Cliffs pulled in from either side. Garibaldi appeared, its surreal blue colour hinted at through the misty air.
