This morning I was woken by sunlight streaming into my stateroom! We were anchored off the small town of Twillingate, Newfoundland. Twillingate has been a prosperous fishing community for centuries, and I was looking forward to visiting the town for the first time. The Expedition Team went ashore to set up and await arrival of the guests on the floating pontoon.

We were then treated to a tour of Twillingate’s highlights. First we visited the lookout near the local lighthouse, a stunning spot where some guests (and myself!) made a delicious purchase of local homemade fudge! We also visited the local Museum, where the display included a tribute to the renowned local physician Dr Olds, of whom it was said if he couldn’t cure you, then nobody could!

However, for me, the absolute highlight of the day was our visit to Prime Berth or the Twillingate Fishery and Heritage Centre, owned and operated by Dave and Christine Boyd. Dave was a real character, whose enthusiasm and knowledge of Newfoundland fishing was infectious. He entertained us with his skilful display of splitting cod for salting, showing how cod liver oil was prepared (with the oil filling a one hundred year old pail). He also recited a very touching poem about his life as a fisherman which he had written 45 years before. We were all moved by his tribute to his ancestors.

We returned to the ship for lunch, where guests spent a busy afternoon packing their bags, as tomorrow is sadly our disembarkation in St John’s.

In the afternoon we all gathered in The Theatre for the screening of Photographer Kristine Hannon’s Photo/Video Voyage DVD of our odyssey. Kristine had captured some wonderful photos and video material – from polar bears, northern lights, icebergs, stunning scenery, Norse ruins and more. It’s incredible how much we have packed into the last 17 days from Iceland to Greenland and now to Canada.

Guests then enjoyed a final outstanding dinner from our Executive Chef Anne Marie Cornelius and her team before retiring.
