Day 10 - September 16, 2010 - At Sea, en route to Iqaluit

By Sue Flood, General Naturalist

Co-ordinates: 62°09N, 64°54W

Weather: Overcast with light clouds, Calm seas. Wind 8 knots.

Today was another full day at sea after our fantastic Greenland adventure. We had been sad to leave the dramatic scenery of Greenland behind on Wednesday after some wonderful weather and varied, and highly photogenic experiences but yesterday and today at sea provided a welcome opportunity for some interesting lectures and a chance for guests to recharge their batteries.

The lecture programme continued with a talk on food webs in the Arctic by Hans-Peter Reinthaler, our Botanist.

Later in the morning, Pastry Chef Remy Le Goff demonstrated his art in the Panorama lounge, delighting the guests with his culinary expertise, and with assistance from one of the guests, Lindy, who had celebrated her 21st birthday on board the Prince Albert II last week.

After a leisurely lunch, Archaeologist Dr Colleen Batey gave a fascinating lecture on the Norse in Greenland, providing a welcome review of the sites we have enjoyed visiting over the past few days. It was particularly interesting to see the photos of Dr Batey working at some of the same sites over 32 years ago!

In the late afternoon, Juan Carlos Restrepo introduced guests to the basics of Geology with his well-illustrated lecture “Earth – What Lies Below”.

At the Recap & Briefing we were treated to an advance screening of part of Photographer Kristine Hannon’s Photo/Video Voyage DVD of our odyssey, including footage of the awesome Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, which we had all been privileged to witness on the previous few evenings.

We all then enjoyed yet another outstanding dinner from our Executive Chef Anne Marie Cornelius and her team.

The evening was brought to a challenging but fun conclusion in the Panorama Lounge with a game of Name That Tune, where guests’ musical knowledge was challenged with the help of Perry on the keyboard.
