Tromsø to Reykjavik

 

 

Day 1 - August 22, 2010 - Tromsø, Norway 

Glühwein, tea, and canapés were served on the outer decks and our voyage had definitely started.

Day 2 - August 23, 2010 - Day at Sea

During the day the conditions became better, giving a good chance that the weather tomorrow when we do our first Zodiac tour will be a nice sunny arctic day.

Day 3 - August 24, 2010 - Bear Island and At Sea

Bear Island, shrouded in mist was a wonderful spectacle – resembling a mysterious film set for the land that time forgot!

Day 4 - August 25, 2010 - Kapp Lee and Brasvellbreen

Guests then came ashore to enjoy their first walrus sighting, where a group of around ten huge male walrus lay stacked together on the sandy beach.

Day 5 - August 26, 2010 - Nordaustlandet, Svalbard

Mom stood on an ice floe right in front of us while she sniffed the air and stared at us. It made us wonder who was watching who.

Day 6 - August 27, 2010 - Kvitøya, Svalbard

Just along shore we found fifteen to twenty female walrus hauled out with several calves along with ten to fifteen in the water.

Day 7 - August 28, 2010 - Palanderbukta, Alkefjellet and Augustabukta

The magnificent cliffs of Alkefjellet (Mount Guillemot) are home to thousands of nesting guillemot birds.

Day 8 - July 13, 2010 - Smeerenburg (Amsterdamøya) and Sallyhamna, Svalbard, Norway

Five bears were seen, among them a mother and her cub.

Day 9 - August 30, 2010 - Longyearbyen, Svalbard; At Sea in the afternoon

This was the last stop of the Prince Albert II in the Svalbard Archipelago on this voyage and the last one for this season.

Day 10 - August 31, 2010 - At Sea, en route to Jan Mayen

The evening was brought to a challenging but fun conclusion in the Panorama Lounge with a game of Name that Tune, where guests’ musical knowledge was challenged with the help of Emilio on the keyboard.

Day 11 - September 1, 2010 - At Sea between Svalbard and Jan Mayen

Several succumbed to the whisky introduction and lively discussion ensued – perhaps inevitably!

Day 12 - September 2, 2010 - Jan Mayen, Norway

Although the conditions were not ideal for a landing, we decided to give it our best go. That would mean expedition staff members would have to be waist-deep (and often chest-deep) in the water all morning.

Day 13 - September 3, 2010 - At Sea

With pleasant seas through the night, the Prince Albert II continued its journey south towards our destination of adventure for the coming days – Iceland – and our first port of call tomorrow, Husavik.

Day 14 - September 4, 2010 - Husavik, Iceland

We got some fantastic sightings of this whale as it surfaced very close to the boat.

Day 15 - September 5, 2010 - Hesteyri and Vigur Island, Iceland

EL Robin had planned a little surprise: we would call at Hesteyri, an abandoned fishing village, have a look and would be walking around the place during the morning with the help of some “local” guides.

Day 16 - September 6, 2010 - Grundarfjördur, Iceland

Snaefellnes National Park is outstanding for its great geological diversity, rich birdlife and the Snaefellsjökull Glacier, an active volcano that towers over everything in the park.
