Tromsø to Longyearbyen

 

 

Day 1 - August 2, 2010 - Tromso, Norway

This meant that most guests had time to enjoy a welcome drink, check in, have a snack, settle into suites, do some unpacking and even explore the Prince Albert II a little before being summoned to our muster station in The Theatre by the ship’s emergency signal.

Day 2 - August 3, 2010 - Storstappen And Nordkapp, Norway

Herds of Reindeer were scattered around the plateau and pretty much all of our guests had a chance to take a good look at these gracious animals.

Day 3 - August 4, 2010 - Bear Island, Svalbard

Through a tunnel in the rocks the Zodiac was crossing to another bay with such dramatic scenery that you were reminded of the film Jurassic Park.

Day 4 - August 5, 2010 - Kapp Lee, Edgeoya, Svalbard

From the water the bear was watched by the walrus on duty and more walruses were hauled out on the nearby beach next to some wooden huts.

Day 5 - August 6, 2010 - Svalbard, Zeipelodden, Palanderbukta, Alkefjellet And Augustabukta

The joy of seeing such majestic ice and the jagged snouts of the glacier at the end of the fjord! As the sun succeeded in burning off the earlier mist, the view was truly breathtaking.

Day 6 - August 7, 2010 - Austfonna & Storoya, Svalbard

Two male polar bears were circling and attacking the walrus herd that was hauled out on the beach.

Day 7 - August 8, 2010 - Farthest North

One by one our guests made the plunge, some opting to go for a second dip in the frigid waters before some of the crew onboard took their turn.

Day 8 - August 9, 2010 - Svalbard, Monacobreen (Liefdefjord) & Makeoyane

Upon arrival, we were rewarded by the sight of a female bear and cub dozing just above the beach.

Day 9 - August 10, 2010 - Amsterdamoya & Sallyhamna, Svalbard

Once back onboard, our Expedition Leader Robin West and our Captain, wanting to get our guests ashore for a landing, decided to head for Magdalenafjord, one of the most scenic (and visited) fjords in Spitsbergen.

Day 10 - August 11, 2010 - 14th of July Glacier, Svalbard; at sea

On the bird cliff there was still a lot of activity going on and so you were able to observe Kittywakes, Guillemots, Glaucous Gulls and even Puffins flying around.
