By Hans-Peter Reinthaler, Biologist

Co-ordinates: 38°42´N, 09°07´W
Weather: sunny

Bunkering and provision loading was still going on, but the suites were ready and so we could start embarkation punctually at 12.00. The guests arrived during the whole afternoon and at 16.00 boarding of all our guests for Voyage 7007 from Lisbon to Portsmouth was finished.

Shortly afterwards, Expedition Leader Conrad Combrink announced through the PA system the obligatory Emergency Drill for the guests, and at 17.15 the Prince Albert II set course for the next port, Oporto, 192 nautical miles north of Lisbon.

Together with our guests, I enjoyed the sail away down the Tejo River passing by some of the important sights of Lisbon. Like, for example, the Praça do Comércio (Commerce Square), the monument to Christ the King (Cristo Rei), the Praça do Império with the Jerónimos Monastery, Monument to the Discoveries and Torre de Belém. Of course, standing on the sundeck aft our guests could also experience the sound of the Ponte 25 de Abril (25 April Bridge), caused by the cars passing over the steel construction of the bridge.

Embarkation day concluded as always with the introduction of some heads of department and the Expedition Team, and with an excellent dinner in The Restaurant.
