Floreana Island, Galapagos, Ecuador

By Hernan Olaya, Naturalist
Weather: Sunny with scattered clouds
Air Temperature: 24ºC
Pressure: 961 hPa
Wind: 5 knots

When we woke up in front of Floreana Island, we got the feeling that nature held many mysteries for us.
The scenery was outstanding: from the Silver Galapagos you could see the mist creating a white sheet up on the highlands contrasting with the blue sky over the lowlands.

The morning-disembarkation was at 08 a.m., followed by a zodiac cruise and kayaking along Post Office Bay. By the time we were approaching the beach a sea turtle showed up.

Later on I shared stories about Floreana, and the mysteries that happened here in the 1930´s, when the first settlers arrived.

At Post Office Bay we keep a wonderful tradition alive: we collect postcards from the mail-box to hand deliver them -and we drop ours there to be collected by somebody else. We went through all the postcards looking for addresses guests might reach when they go home. And some were found to be deliverable!!

Then we went to have an extraordinary visit to a lava tunnel. After walking for several minutes inside the tunnel we turned off all the lights and we enjoyed the serenity that the cave offered. And then we went for a swim inside the cave!! What an experience we had in this tunnel! Legend says this is the Fountain of Youth -hopefully this is true…

Later on at Champion Islet, the snorkeling experience was great! The sea lions were following us for at least 30 minutes and we played with them. Eventually a shark showed up, hundreds of fish were in the area and all of us were excited to see what the underwater world had to offer. It was a fantastic snorkeling experience, one of the highlights of the trip.

Once back on board we enjoyed a concert given by our pianist -then the sunset announced we were about to finish another day in Paradise…
