Espanola Island

By Martin Loyola, Galapagos Naturalist guide

Weather: Overcast
Air Temperature: 18 - 21ºC

Today was another beautiful day in paradise. I started my morning with our arrival at Gardner Bay, in the middle of calm, crystal clear waters, surrounded by sea turtles and playful sea lions.

We landed at Gardner Bay’s beach of white coralline sand. Here we walked for about one hour along the beach, admiring the baby sea lions, the dominant males, marine iguanas and curious mockingbirds, a species endemic to this island. Espanola is one of the oldest islands in the archipelago; creatures have been evolving here for a longer period of time than anywhere else in the Galapagos, which facilitates the evolution of new species. The number of animals we find here, the peaceful walk and the soothing sound of the ocean made this morning very special.

Many of our guests took the opportunity to go snorkelling and kayaking. Despite the average visibility they saw sea lions, white tipped sharks, surgeonfish and lots of other marine creatures. The kayakers had a wonderful time also as they followed the coastline taking in the sights and beautiful conditions.

At the end of our morning, the Silver Galapagos navigated to Punta Suarez on the same island. Here we had a walk of over two hours and time went fast with all that the island has to offer. The best of all was the colony of Waved Albatross - this is the only place in the world where these birds nest. We saw them feeding their chicks and taking off from the cliff. We also watched the blue-footed boobies put on a show of their dancing courtship display to attract mates. We passed by the blowhole, which is created by the pressure of the waves and the air shooting jets of water high up in the air.

As we walked back, I felt a huge joy for all that I had done with and for our guests today. It was a very active day on an island full of marvellous attractions.
