Valparaiso, Chile

By Toby Musgrave

Weather: Sunny afternoon with cool breeze,  22oC / 77oF

Today marked the commencement of the “Chilean Fjords Highlights” expedition voyage, and embarkation began at 14.30 with the usual rigmarole of registering aboard, albeit tempered by the spread of delicious canapés and glasses of champagne.  With the formalities completed and all 122 guests aboard by 16.00, there was half-an-hour to get settled in before the mandatory safety drill - the first and last time we hope to don a big, orange lifejacket.

Then, at just after 17.00, it was time to cast off and cruise slowly out of the harbor in glorious sunshine, to enjoy the views back to land from the Sun Deck with another (!) glass in hand. But not much time for getting lazy, for this is an expedition ship after all, and at 18.00 we all gathered together again in the Theatre where our Expedition Leader Robin West presented the various Department heads and Expedition Staff.  Robin also gave a brief outline of what expedition cruising is all about, which thankfully seemed warmly received.

With the business of the day completed, it was time to relax in the Panorama Lounge and enjoy pre-dinner drinks and nibbles before descending to The Restaurant for a delicious spread.
