 Longyearbyen, Svalbard

By Hans-Peter Reinthaler, Biologist

Co-ordinates: 78°13´N, 15°36´E
Weather: cloudy and rainy
Air Temperature: 8° C

The first day of this tour started with typical Svalbard weather for this year; cloudy skies and sometimes rain.
Embarkation was completed by Zodiacs as the pier was occupied by another ship. Guests on the charter flight arrived punctually and the process of embarkation went smooth and without any troubles. During embarkation, my duty was to shuttle the guests and their luggage to the ship.

Shortly afterwards, Expedition Leader Kara Weller announced through the PA system the repositioning of the ship to the pier as the other vessel sailed away. At 5pm, the obligatory Emergency Drill for the guests took place.

Embarkation day nearly finished with the introduction of some heads of department and the Expedition Team, but this time the Silver Explorer didn´t leave the pier until 10pm as we were waiting for lost luggage to come. The first day of our Svalbard expedition finished with an excellent dinner in The Restaurant.
