Marco Favero, Marine Biologist and Fisheries Expert

Marco was born in Mar del Plata, Argentina in 1963 and studied marine biology at the University of Mar del Plata. After his graduation in 1986, he started a twenty-year research project in Antarctica, and later earned his Doctoral degree with specialization in Antarctic seabird ecology. His background in the biology and ecology of top marine predators comprises more than two hundred works including research articles and dissertations in scientific congresses.

Currently, Marco is Head of Seabird Ecology and Conservation Group at the University of Mar del Plata, and Senior Researcher at the National Research Council in Argentina. During recent years he has been deeply involved in the development of local and international conservation strategies for seabirds, particularly on incidental mortality of albatrosses associated to fishing vessels. Since 2007 Marco has been the Chairperson of the Advisory Committee for the Agreement on the Conservation for Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP), and inter-governmental agreement that seeks to conserve threatened seabirds by coordinating international actions.

In 2000, Marco joined expedition vessels as Lecturer and Expedition Leader. His journeys have taken him to Antarctica, the Arctic, the East and West Atlantic, the South Pacific, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.
