Dr. Claire Allum, Anthropologist

Dr. Claire Allum earned her BA and doctorate from the University of Calgary and her MA in Anthropology from Trent University. She started out specializing in Northern Plains prehistory—able to identify every bone in a bison—but changed focus after spending three months excavating a 5,000-year-old site on the coast of Ecuador. Since the 1980’s Claire has worked in Latin America uncovering some of the earliest pottery in the Americas, mapping monumental architecture in northern Peru, and working with the Chachi, an indigenous tropical forest people living in Esmeraldas, Ecuador. She knows dozens of ways to cook bananas and how to paddle a canoe standing up.

Claire has taught students at several universities and colleges and has spent six seasons working with students at the Maya site of Maax Na in northwestern Belize. Her other fieldwork includes working in Ghana, West Africa, the north coast of Labrador, the northern peninsula of Newfoundland and the plains and foothills of southern Alberta. She is an avid SCUBA diver and caver.
