Britta Munkes is a marine biologist and research diver, who for the last 15 years has worked all over the world. She studied in Berlin and Kiel (Germany), obtaining her PhD from the Institute for Marine Sciences in Kiel.

Britta began her career researching the impact of small schools of fish on coral reefs in the Red Sea, followed by studies in the feeding ecology of sponges in the Caribbean Sea, and the response of coral to heat stress in Indonesia.

Recently, she’s worked on the stability of seagrass meadows and algae forests against nutrient pollution in the Baltic Sea, Mediterranean Sea and in Western Australian waters. She has also worked as a scientist and lecturer at the University of Bremen (Germany), and at Edith Cowan University in Perth.

Britta returned to Kiel in 2011, to work at the Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research (Geomar). Her research focuses on all kinds of ecological processes, and structuring benthic marine communities.
She is especially interested in the impact of human-induced stressors on marine ecosystems and their effects on biodiversity and ecosystem stability.
